I remember when Different Sense (the single) came out and people were really angry in the direction that DEG (Dir En Grey) took for this album. I find it weird that people get upset with music artists for changing. (Or just evolving in general) not everything stays the same, especially when you are a creative person. Another example is when The Offspring came out with Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace people thought they had changed WAY too much. I remember seeing it all over facebook and I think Myspace at the time. This was a conversation that took place recently and wanted to ask what yall thought about it.

Word! I think with Korn it was more they were just obviously going through some stuff. David was gone and the Untitled record didn't go over well to start and I'm all for experimentation. I think the biggest cringe for me in there wasn't the dubstep record but III with Ross Robinson where they were trying to force the sound of the first record out. Chris Cornell did a record with Timbaland that I loved but most ppl hate so I get it with the dubstep record :)

I've had songs (or albums) grow on me as I started to grow up and I remember being like "Why didn't I like this sooner!" hahaha

Abadon

I feel like everyone says "So and so sold out" when people do something they don't like or change it up. It's such a cop out imo

Abadon

I mean, my first album was Gauze which was their first album (I found them through MTV's Worlds Best Music Videos) the song was Yokan and seen they had a whole discography. They have a best of album that might be more beneficial for you to listen to as it'll have a little bit of everything,.

Abadon

I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed Korn's dubstep era. I thought it was a lot of fun honestly haha. I mean, it's just hair lol people need to chill

Staying true to yourself while doing new things is what it's all about! Making it your own!

Abadon

Yo, I remember that too!

Abadon

Yes! Agreed! Staying in a box is boring AF

You cannot put people and artist in boxes. You have to let them grow and change. Staying stagnant is death.

Like when Metallica came out with Load. People way overreacted, I loved that album.

I think artist expression and evolution go hand in hand. My favorite example is Snoop Dogg, he's never stagnated but still holds true to who he is. From gangsta rap to Sexual Eruption to Snoop Lion, and he'll still hit the blunt on live tv, true goat.

Except for a band like AC/DC or something who are a band where you get what you get and you don't get upset, you can't really call yourself a fan of a band if they go in a direction you don't like especially if it's this gradual progression/evolution. Sure there are instances where a band is just in a weird place and have an identity crisis of sorts. Korn comes to mind with this where they did a dubstep record then reunited with Ross Robinson to "get back to their roots" and both were kinda "meh" for me but then Head came back and they just found their rhythm again. Cold's another band where they just evolved beyond their Nu-Metal/Grunge roots and that's okay. Look at Metallica and all the shit they got slammed for when they cut their hair and did shorter songs but they're still selling out stadiums. Anyway, yeah. Sorry so long. You do you as an artist is what matters most I think.

Getting mad at Artists for changing and evolving is silly. Also nobody really gets mad when an artist has had a handful of albums out, changes a bit, then explodes in popularity (Ice Nine Kills comes to mind). Ive definitely found albums that i didnt like cause they were different that what i was used to, but found to be very good when revisited ( or needed time for it to grow on me).

It's sort of a catch 22 for a lot of bands or artists. If they change their sound, they cop shit from some fans but on the flip side, there are other bands who cop shit for sounding the same and never changing up their sound. Silverchair are one if my all-time favourite bands and their sound changed dramatically over the years.

Rise and Fall and Days Go By are probably my 2 fav Offspring albums. I was in middle school when Ixnay came out and it felt surreal actually getting to listen to a band evolve musically me as I grew up.

Cody Anderson

If you do anything creative, you have to change things up from time to time. You have to grow and evolve. To paraphrase Ace Frehley, "I quit KISS because we had become a KISS cover band."

Joe White

i admittedly thought the Offspring took a turn for the worse with Americana, but i also *loved* their first three albums and i was much more of a punk purist back then. these days, i'm more understanding of why artists feel the need to switch things up even if they don't go in a direction i'm into. everyone wants artists to be brands because brands are consistent and comfortable, but artists are messy-ass people like the rest of us. sometimes they get bored and want to challenge themselves, ya know?

Dave K

I Haven't listened to Dir En Gray yet. Where's the best place to start, song or album?

Lokinomicon

People got upset at Linkin Park too once Minutes to Midnight came out. I had this exact conversation with a friend of mine. I loved the album, and he thought they were just trying to sound "mainstream" (whatever that means) I was like "people change as they get older. The influences and styles are going to change and evolve" its a silly argument honestly. We're not the ones making the music, so we don't get to dictate the direction they want to go in. Either enjoy it, or don't and find someone else to listen to
