Okay, I could be remembering wrong, but I have a theory. I feel like in the first chapter, when Mel and the nanobots are chatting with each other after it's all over, it's insinuated Blume/Mel have kind of a crush on each other, and the nanobots are aware of this. I think this new Mel might be some creation of the nano-bots to make 'real' Mel jealous. Just a theory!
