2014-05-07 21:58:55 +0000 UTCThey are different from a consumer side (with Patreon's "mass market" you are paying $2-$5 once per month and this gives you 8-9 pages of full-color comic whether as with commissions you'll need to pay $60 just to get one page of an inferior B/W comic) but they are more-or-less the same "from the other side": comic is comic, it still must be composed, drawn, colored, etc. Sure, it's slightly easier to draw a page of series (you know how to draw these characters quite well, you probably have some semis lying around, etc), but <b>three times</b> difference? That's too much. AFAICS Patreon already does much better than passive donation button ever did, but it's still far cry from what's needed to see three-pages per week, side stories, etc.

2014-05-05 10:48:43 +0000 UTCI don't think that's an entirely fair comparison though. Commissions are bespoke to one customer, while an ongoing comic is more mass market. Different situation with different amount of value to the customer. Still, it would be nice if we could pull in some more people.

2014-05-05 08:15:45 +0000 UTCI think a lot of people would love that, too (I was kinda disappointed when it turned out that both Than Dall's and Alexis' tops are cropped… severely cropped in the Alexis case), but it'll probably only happen if comic will be better funded. AFAICS switch to the Patreon pushed this comic from about ⅙-funded to about ⅓-funded (if we'll use commission as a price guide), which is a great achievement, sure, but it's still three times less than needed. Only one patron out of ten pays more than the minimal amount for their chosen reward and the most "profligate" one gives just $20 per month. We need to either bring more patrons or somehow convince the existing ones to give more.
