That fight of Sayaka's against the Witch at the end of this episode has an insane amount of symbolism and parallels to her non-Magical life. The Judeo-Christian imagery of pain, sacrifice, stoicism, and emotional self-flagellation. That scene really screams warning about what comes next. Great first full reaction for me.

Magical Girls were made as female versions of male Tokus (like how Sailor Moon is female power rangers, while Cardcapter Sakura is female Masked Rider). This is like what Evangelion is to mecha anime, a "deconstruction" and "parody"

He goes biblical overdrive in his show Kamen Rider Gaim, the fruit samurai Roku. The fruits in that show are related to the Garden of Eden, but they also include a lot of dark takes biblical arcs, like Noah's Arc or the crucifixion of Jesus

I remember not wanting to get into it cos of the girly sh*t, but this is actually legit a fascinating dark and mature story about naive choices and the brutal consequences. We keep going down this rabbit hole of despair with each episode... and I hate watching it happen. The character writing is very good. They legit feel like teen girls in my opinion, and their reactions to the unforseen consequences of their actions is quite understandable. Sayaka has heroic ideals and holds herself to these unrealistic expectations which as a result is hurting her. She judges Kyoko and Homura for being selfish.. yet once she sees her selfless choices not being earned (her friend taking her crush), she's in a state of internal conflict and doesn't know how to cope with those difficult feelings. She also doesn't see herself as human anymore so she justifies the hurt in a self destructive way. "I have to be the strong selfless hero cos that's what I believe in. Why does seeing my friend take my crush hurt and grow strong negative feelings within me? I'm supposed to be selfless. It doesn't matter if it hurts cos I'm not human anymore anyway. This pain also is justifiable punishment for me having some semblance of selfish intentions with my wish which makes me a hypocrite for judging the others for being selfish. I guess I'm not as selfless as I thought I was."
