That's exactly that Mayuri's mind made Szayel to not fall into despair basically and that was on purpose because y all suppose to think it will be emotional etc but Mayuri is more complex than that

RIP to one of the baddest waifus of Bleach, Nemu! Such an underappreciated character. Mayuri truly is an artist! :D
Also, love that Szayelopporo scene, cool to see he lives rent-free in Mayuri's mind lol

Both your shadow and your reflection would also have "Shared memories, unspoken" or the significance of your shadow having its own reflection, but y'all didn't discuss that. The only drugs I'm on is Lexapro, lol.
Some trivia: The reason that vampires don't have a reflection (sometimes also a shadow,) is back then, mirrors used to be backed by silver, which is a holy metal. Silver reveals that vampires don't have a "holy shadow." Nowadays, they use aluminium, which isn't holy. So theoretically, vampires would have a reflection in a modern mirror. Silver is also a valuable metal, so if you broke one, you'd be in debt "for seven years," but nowadays people interpret that as having bad luck for seven years. I hate that the original meaning got lost.

BLEACH 36
"Control" and "free will" are major themes here, fitting ones when dealing with "Science" and "Progress" (Even more so when talking about the Left Hand and Nemu who've been used, and controlled by others) Mayuri throughout this battle is leaping into the thralls of evolution, but as we see evolution is dangerous and should be approached carefully.
Mayuri is clearly a character who is always in control, he prepares several times over, but as mentioned by Nemu he forgets things before coming to this battle, but how do you even prepare for combat with something that embodies evolution?I'd argue the answer is also to evolve (as shown by Nemu and Pernida) and a major point of this battle is to show the slight yet poignant character progression of Mayuri, which is why they make it a point to show that other shinigami are thankful to him.
- Mayuri is weird because morally speaking he's completely insane, his sense of ethics is completely different from ours but in his own crazy way, it's obvious that he did in fact love Nemu in his own twisted way, so much so that since he's made her he feels he's living in a Dream, Nemu was perfect to him and once she died he was made to wake up from this Dream.
Mayuri manifested Szayelaporro as his own inner thoughts, everything he said. Mayuri feeling despair was him facing his own hypocrisy in regards to perfection.
And at the end when he reclaims her cerebrum we see him re-enter his Dream-like state, deep within the oceans of progress, where he happily sinks.
(The idea the he cherished her evolution over his own life is proof of his own pseudo means of being a parent)
Pernida represents Development, individuality and adolescence, something the arm shares with Nemu. Pernida started out as the arm of the Soul King, but it rejected that. Pernida didn't want to be seen as just an arm, but as its own person. And throughout the fight it developed: Like an infant it at first couldn't speak, just mumble, just a few words and broken sentences. It became more intelligent and eloquent and even had a "rebellious teenage phase" (thanks to absorbing traits from Kenpachi) with the occasional bout of wisdom before becoming like an adult. It developed its own sense of right and wrong and grew beyond just being the arm of the Soul King. In the end Pernida was a full-fledged person, an individual that grew beyond its programming. Same for Nemu whose development we saw and which ended with her growing and evolving beyond her programming, deciding for herself what she wants and going against Mayuri's order and it ended with both their deaths. That brought the final piece of Mayuri's symbolism to full circle, parenthood and death and birth (Mayuri's sword is named after a psychopomp for dead children)
- The reason why Pernida eats Nemu because he learned Mayuri's bankai personality. All that Pernida learn during this fight. Learned how to talk because of Zaraki. Gained Zaraki's physicality. Gained skim peeling ability because of Mayuri's bankai and learned how to eat without teeth too, basically whatever Pernida touches, it will learn and also copy the behavior
- We learn here that Mayuri used the fetuses from his artificial soul research to reach the Bankai state, which gives clarity as to why his Bankai takes on the visage of a baby
- Sidenote 2: The title of the chapter that concludes Mayuri's fight is "never ending dream"

I definitely agree that the espada showing up ruined the emotion, would have liked to see what Mayuri though of nemu/more emotion out of him
But I took it more like him fighting his own philosophy , trying to snap himself out of it and convince himself she was just a experiment. Rather than his philosophy vs the other guys .

Correct. Like… we know it’s happening in hustlers head. When we said it ruined the moment.. it’s not a literal statement . It’s only that I was on the verge of crying myself and then listening to that inner monologue stopped me from feeling sad instantly. Which is what we were explaining.

In terms of your confusion for Shunsui's Bankai during the discussion at the beginning, the connection between Bankai and Shikai for him, is that his Shikai is representative of 'Kids Entertainment' where as his Bankai is representative of 'Adult Entertainment'. In both they basically represent Entertainment as a whole.

I think szayelaporro popping up was better than just having a flashback to his comments during the espada fight then an inner monologue on it. Fun way to show us his inner thoughts on his own hypocrisy.

Little bit interesting how you say szayelaporro kind of ruined the moment and you didn't believe what he was saying. That wasn't actually szayelaporro there talking to Mayuri. It was Mayuri inner thoughts manifested as him. Everything szayelaporro was saying was what Mayuri was currently thinking. So Mayuri for that brief moment was feeling despair and facing his own hypocrisy in regards to perfection.

Mayuri is an interesting character and Pernida as the Soul King's left arm governs evolution is a good enemy for Mayuri. A character who is all about evolution loathe perfection but part of him thinks Nemu is perfect which is what made him close to losing and Nemu's death makes him remember his speech with the Espada 8 Szayelaporro When Mayuri says The perfect being, huh? There is no such thing as perfect in this world. That may sound cliché, but it's the truth. The average person admires perfection and seeks to obtain it. But, what's the point of achieving perfection? There is none. Nothing. Not a single thing. I loathe perfection! If something is perfect, then there is nothing left. There is no room for imagination. No place left for a person to gain additional knowledge or abilities. Do you know what that means? For scientists such as ourselves, perfection only brings despair. It is our job to create things more wonderful than anything before them, but never to obtain perfection. A scientist must be a person who finds ecstasy while suffering from that antimony. In short, the moment that foolishness left your mouth and reached my ears, you had already lost. Of course, that's assuming you are a scientist, peak speech and peak character writing
