In the version I watched on Crunchyroll (UK), the last bit with the nice music was the photos of from their Chinese viewers and heartfelt descriptions of them (probably! I cannot read Mandarin, so just a guess). S1 of this show captures ordinary people's extraordinary moments so very well and the photos got well with the theme. The one you are watching is the Japanese version and I don't know why they replaced them with the images that vaguely ship Chen Xiaoshi and Lu Guang! 😭 It's like the distributor decided their potential audience pre-emptively to the exclusion of others. Also the Japanese version changed main characters' names (CX to Toki and LG to Hikaru) and they are not crediting Chinese animators in the opening and ending. They even employed another band to cover the songs for the op and ed, so what we are listening to here are not from original Bai Sha Jaws. I get there are complex Copyrignt reasons and such, and for the change of opening and ending, there can be some money reasons too (like the distributor might have a contract with a music studio that necessitates hiring their musician at every release) but as Japanese let me say it's most likely pandering-to-racist reasons they went for these decisions. If Chinese friends are here, on behalf of us, I'm very sorry😟

My mom be playin Mahjong with the aunties and they speaking 3 or 4 languages at the table in regular conversation. My mom speaks 4 Chineses (Mandarin, Fuzhou, teochew, canto). Canto and Mando are two different languages that just share a written origin. What's interesting in this episode was the daughter speaking Mandarin while her daddy speaks canto. What always confuses me is I can barely speak Mando, and all these aunties speaking in different languages yet understanding is baffling.

2024-09-14 01:27:57 +0000 UTCAlso, it's too bad the version you watched didn't have the special ending where they had people submit photos and stories of the photos (that was part of a special project during the COVID shutdowns in China). And I think the translation of the old phone message at the end was not done well. The translation has her saying "Let's get married" but I think the better translation would be "I'll be waiting for you to marry me" because part of his motivation is that she is waiting for him to "do it right" and get her dad's permission.

2024-09-14 00:43:00 +0000 UTCOne of the things I like the best about this show is that they use VAs with different Mandarin accents for some of the characters (e.g. the parents in ep 1 had very "country" accents) but this episode took it over the top. The master/dad spoke Cantonese but everyone else spoke Mandarin, which would actually be considered totally different languages if they were not both "Chinese" so it's wild that they were all conversing like the two "dialects" were mutually intelligible 🤣
