Imho he did the sensible thing and got the confirmation from a seemingly trustworthy source. He probably would have waited until after the festival to open up that story to Holo. But well, Holo had to lie about being able to read and had to access the letter whilst he was gone. It was so hard to watch her shout out her twisted understanding of Lawrences actions. Yes, she's having a mental breakdown, but Lawrence was working so hard to give her a good time and to gather info on her hometown as he knew it was mad important to her...
