The proof that he cares about her is the fact he rejected the other girl who could have played the same role for his experiment on love.

2024-03-28 00:18:04 +0000 UTCYou’re right as far as everyone is aware, the anime has repeatedly made him seem colder to Kei than he actually is in the source material and the prevailing fan consensus is that he does like Kei as much as someone like him is possible. The only hiccup in that is Ayanakoji is the most unreliable narrator ever, so we could eventually get a volume just completely rewriting the script and it wouldn’t be out of character lol Enjoy the novels though, they are so dense with information and such a great way to get into this series, the anime is sadly serviceable at best most of the time

2024-03-27 23:33:01 +0000 UTCI am actually getting into the light novel tomorrow. I've heard that these moments with Kei aren't translated well/cut short in the anime. From comments i've seen online. Apparently he genuinely likes her but doesn't know how to convey his emotions. Hense the ending where he was praying that he would smile. He was happy on the inside but kept the same face on the outside. I assume that they white room literally ripped him of expression as well as everything else the room took. But then again. This is just an assumption. I'll figure it out soon.

He is experimenting to see if he can learn to feel love for another person and he is using the "ingredients" he thinks will give him the highest chance of success with his experiment. But you understood that he does want to try and experience the emotion of love with her. One small chance in the LN that kinda takes away from your discussion is I believe Hiyori (class c girl) was still with him in the cafe when Kei was there but still funny discussion nonetheless.
