A small note, at this time the english got along better with the portugese than the Spaniards, who they've been fighting directly for decades at that point. In general, England had very few friends in Europe at that time since Henry 8 decided to split off from the catholic church. They don't talk english at all in any of the scenes if you want to be realistic, only languages in episode 1 is Dutch (Holland), Portuguese and Japanese. As the only person in english is John Blackthorne and he has nobody to talk to in english.

This episode 1 is amazing to show how insane for my European perspective the Japanese honor and suicide for that honor was, I could understand him offering to do seppuku to himself for disrespecting, but offering his son too is so wild and ending his bloodline.

2024-03-27 08:27:07 +0000 UTC1st thing you have to do if you're doing anything with Samurai or Japanese style sword fighting is get Hiroyuki Sanada(aka Toranaga). Dude is the real deal when it comes to sword fighting. You've recently seen him in Bullet Train but he's in everything from Last Samurai, Rush Hour, Mortal Kombat, John Wick, and 47 Ronin. Or one of my alltime favorite TV shows LOST. Dudes a badass! Plain an simple.

2024-03-27 04:23:51 +0000 UTCAs much as I enjoyed Anna Sawai in Monarch it's nothing compared to her performance in Shogun so far for me. I'm loving her so much. Hell, I didn't look up her name until Shogun. That's how much I'm enjoying her in this role. Perfect casting all around really.
