I've seen the show but it's been years so I don't remember this at all. The thing is, if your relationship with your father was traumatising, which it absolutely is if he abandoned you, facing him might be just be too difficult to bear if you have yet to process everything that happened. Parent-child relationships are always a super complicated matter and all of their feelings are valid atp, both taiga's and ryuji's.

(as a disclaimer I've never seen/read this series before, so I am in the same boat as Lee and the gang) If I had a shit father, I know I'd appreciate the opportunity to say my piece and have that closure. (Taiga has this opportunity now) If you had a shit father who passed away or disappeared, you'd never get the chance to voice it. (Ryuuji clearly dislikes his father but also is never gonna get complete closure)
