@Barry honestly It was more of Fengxian not feeling so betrayed by thinking Lakan abandoned her after finally being able to sleep with her. Also if Lakan had known somehow he would have tried to get back sooner or perhaps buyout Fengxian through an intermediatory since he couldn't get back sooner. Perhaps I'm getting Lakan more credit than he deserves since he seems like a brilliant strategist/schemer with his off hand comments of how easy things are when he gives a few orders and everything works out and that's just in relation to his job that he gives some effort or at least that's the vibe i'm getting.

2024-03-18 19:55:58 +0000 UTC@Skebaba in that case I misunderstood the reason of being sent away and it would make sense considering the aftermath of Fengming's execution when Maomao and 80 or so people lost their jobs just cause they had some relation to her family.

2024-03-18 19:49:01 +0000 UTC@paladar blade It wasn't to reclaim the family's honor, it was just in case (like Family Head quite literally stated), because back in those days if you fuck up at the palace, it COULD escalate to clan level of things, w/ best case losing everything worst case total clan extermination. So he basically told Lakan to fuck off & skip town just in case to let the heat etc die down over time, while they scope if there's gonna be any follow-up to Luomen being yeeted out from the rear palace for fucking up so bad. Even if there was a total extermination, at least Lakan wouldn't be close enough & thus theoretically the bloodline could survive even if everyone else would get the clap. Hence why Head specified Lakan since he was close to Luomen, which might make him a primary target first & foremost worst case scenario. This is also why the Head disowned Luomen, to restrict potential damage vectors etc

2024-03-18 17:22:04 +0000 UTCFor some reason the anime didn't include the mention that while Fengxian would always win at Go, she never did win at Xiangqi which is what Lakan is more specced for (he basically just plays Go on the side to alleviate repetitiveness I guess?), so clearly you can see the disparity in both of their specs in that sense

2024-03-18 17:11:58 +0000 UTCWell, I was convinced Lakan was not a legit bad guy but I did not expect him to be so sympathetic. The writing for this is incredible.

2024-03-18 15:43:37 +0000 UTCShes on a trip. As for Lakan, I thought he was going to be a troll who meant well but took a prank too far. This episode took me by surprise, I was absolutely stunned.

2024-03-18 15:40:54 +0000 UTCLakan still wouldn't be able to do anything. Aristocratic families do not mess around if someone is tarnishing their reputation, even if they are direct relations.

2024-03-18 15:39:58 +0000 UTCReally? Thats very strange, either way Lakan has no choice but the war angle would translate way better to a general audience.

2024-03-18 15:32:28 +0000 UTCMan, once again we can't hate on someone else we thought was a bad guy. Should have known better too cause in this time period you had no say in anything half the time. 😔 I am high key hoping that the coutasan that he has to buy is Fengxie cause I bet he doesn't even know she is still alive! 😫

2024-03-18 12:59:07 +0000 UTCI noticed that Adorkable didn't join you for this one but I didn't hear why, hope she's okay. Anyway this episode really hit hard, and I didn't really expect to Tokyo Drift into an 180 on my outlook of Maomao's father like I had, let alone to completely hate her previously unknown grandfather so quickly. Still, even though a true fairytale ending for them is likely impossible I hope that now they can find a measure of happiness renenter their lives & I can't wait for the next episode.

2024-03-18 12:18:02 +0000 UTCBad wording....I mean the anime said he was sent off for war while the original wass him going to war

2024-03-18 10:02:03 +0000 UTCwhere'd you get study? pretty sure it was military campaign for 3 years from both the manga and novel?

2024-03-18 03:21:58 +0000 UTCThis explains why he was really shocked with Maomao injured, man really loves his daughter. But his mindset/disability control his lifestyle. So when he saw all of this as a game only to see Maomao’s hurt being carried out. He must have been devastated. Larkan…truly a underrated character

2024-03-18 01:20:36 +0000 UTCI noticed earlier in the episode Maomao’s mother was missing a finger and didn’t question it. Fast forward to the flashback and we see it in the bag

2024-03-17 22:48:42 +0000 UTCWhat did director mean when he said he got wiped by his parents. I was concerned that he was “very harshly” physically disciplined as a child but if it’s not serious I’m sorry.

2024-03-17 14:45:45 +0000 UTCSo the biggest change from the manga was that he was sent off for WAR and not study. Weird change they made. War turning from 6 months into 3 years is a more plausible and believable turn of events rather than studying. It almost made it seem like he lost track of time and didnt remember to come back.

2024-03-17 13:30:59 +0000 UTC1) This ep shows Lakan's uncle was present when his father was ordering him to basically leave an reclaim the family's honor that was lost. 2) I would not expect him to know about Fengxian when he first became a apothecary in the pleasure district cause nothing in Lakan's flashback would suggest he would, until He came in contact with Maomao and found about who her dad was. How that happened I don't know but it's my assumption which is why I said if Fengxian had interacted with him and probably talked to him he would have deduced their relationship. Again this is only in theory considering Maomao admitted that he was way better at figuring things out then her with even less information. 3) Given the number of letters on Lakan's desk with his return and the fact we don't know exactly when he offered his services to Verdigris House, there is a chance she could still be hopeful of Lakan's return and would have schemed her way from having to offer her services to clientele. If she had not been wary of Lakan's uncle and only interacted with him early on when he came to the pleasure district even if she had no way from avoiding selling herself her disease would not have progressed as far as it did before it was too late.

2024-03-17 12:21:26 +0000 UTCI don’t think Maomao’s adopted father can tell Fengxian anything. 1) He was expelled from the family before Lakan was sent overseas. Thus he wouldn’t be able to know what happens to Lakan after that, 2) he doesn’t know who Fengxian is because Lakan never told anyone about her according to his flashbacks. I think at most is they knew he was frequenting a Courtesan, that’s all, 3) Fengxian is already disappointed and gave up at that point. No matter who told her what, unless it’s from Lakan himself, I doubt she’ll be able to listen. Not to mention that she had already degraded herself by sleeping with other men. She’ll feel worthless at that point even if he were to return for her.

2024-03-17 11:04:26 +0000 UTCTo think all of that could have been avoided if she actually told him her plan. Then again I guess she assumed he understood her given how they are so similar and such tactical thinkers. Truly unfortunate, but think how nasty Maomao would be tactically if her parents had ended up together. EDIT: I almost forgot but during the time when Lakan was gone, his uncle Maomao's adopted father was working at Verdigris House and could've explained where Lakan was if Maomao's mother had trusted him enough to interact with him. That would've also prevent her disease from progressing as well before it was too late.
