A bit of context that the show doesn't quite offer is that the French Revolution, like many other revolutions, lean secular, progressive and republican***, but the Revolution wasn't just a threat to the social order, it was more importantly very VERY violent, sometimes indiscriminately. The Christian leadership and the Aristocracy were the establishment and exerted their power over the people, and when the people revolted they weren't always nice to the establishment or the regular people that still supported the establishment. When Marie talks she makes it all sound so righteous and she's so cute, but the revolutionaries did EVERYTHING for democracy, even terrible stuff; massacre, pillaging, r-word, etc. Obviously most people today agree with the Revolution; democracy is one of the most important principles of our societies, but even back then even when people were oppressed by the Church and the nobles, it was still complicated. ***(not the political party, the original meaning: the government by the people for the people).
