SUB VS DUB
Added 2023-10-05 18:12:19 +0000 UTCDo you prefer anime in the original language or English Dub?
Comments
Mostly dub for me. If a show has a dub available I watch it in that. There has been very few shows whose English dub was so bad that I felt like I HAD to watch the sub. Most of the time which ever language you start with is how you associate how you think the characters should sound. For comedy, I think dub is almost always better.

2023-10-06 13:11:04 +0000 UTCI've watched chinese donghua and some live action shows and they seem to really have this VAs that sound almost monotone. It's really too bad since some of their stories are pretty good despite being repetitive.

2023-10-06 05:19:11 +0000 UTCHonestly if it takes place in Japan its better in sub cause the culture and nuances are lost in dub. It also depends on the type of anime. Some types of characters just don't come through a well in dub like kuderes or deadpan characters and tsunderes cause in dub they just sound whiny and bitchy and you kind of want to punch them.😅

2023-10-06 03:45:47 +0000 UTCThere's a couple dubs i prefer. Baccano in japanese kind of threw me because of the setting, Ghost Stories is literally only watchable in dub, and cyberpunk was honestly pretty good as a dub.

2023-10-06 03:23:55 +0000 UTCoh well its just a culture thing lol. I've been to china and hong kong and the natives speak hella fast and hella loud. Some ppl think they are being rude but thats just how they speak. But like I said, its usually not a problem with the language nor the voice actors. Its just how a show is made to fit a language usually. And actually Japanese ppl are more soft spoken then most lol. This is anime so everything is exaggerated.

2023-10-05 22:33:12 +0000 UTCHonestly I actually think the opposite. English dub are only doable (in the case of anime) for more western/shounen shows. DBZ, Naruto, Death Note, FMAB, YuGiOh are all pretty good in english. Bleach...not so much. Ichigo's va is good but I think Bleach has too much japanese words such as "bankai" or spells like "Rikujokoro" that it just sounds horrible in english. The accents are completely off if they try to say a japanese word. And alot of times, the comedy/joke is lost with the translation or voice acting in english. Imagine Bakemonogatari in english. It was already hard to follow if you're not a native japanese who knows alot of japanese literature references but imagine trying to dub that. Not the best idea. Hachikuji's gags would make no sense in english so they will force another joke into it in order to attempt to make sense of it.

2023-10-05 22:09:36 +0000 UTC"the english language isnt spoken with emotion" bro have you not heard Goku's voice actor? 100x better than japanese. And I'm a sub fan for the most part. I understand what you mean by "yelling" since most Japanese work tend to overexaggerate voices. Which is why I say having the original language is always best. These exaggerated emotions are best suited for the japanese works. So its not a question of whether the voice actors themselves are bad or good. But rather their style would not fit the show they are portraying if it was made initially for a different language. There are rare moments where a foreign va would be better than the og but its very very rare. Like I said, Goku's english va fit him much better than the japanese. Although it was already questionable they put an old lady in charge of his voice to begin with. And yes, I know Naruto/Luffy are also female va's but it fit OG Naruto's character and it didn't sound bad in shippuden either. Luffy was always a child at heart and the va still hit it during his serious moments. But Goku's va....i dont know where they were thinking with that one.
Danny
2023-10-05 22:04:45 +0000 UTCHonestly, I try to watch both. I like seeing how certain things are interpreted. Random example: Rias told Issei to do a good job even if there is no reward. That line was in the dub not the sub. I love the ego-driven Seto Kaiba, but the sub makes him more tolerable and nuanced. Repeat viewings of a show either way.

2023-10-05 20:36:58 +0000 UTCChinese might be aight if they didn't have such shit-tier VA quality compared to Japan. Pro tip to Xi, invest into more VA training quality for better China-based animation propaganda soft power culture pieces like what Japan & Korea have been doing so far. Also @Thamor that's because how pitch-shift based Chinese at its core is by definition, that's what causes such a huge turn-off compared to relatively nearby languages like Korean & Japanese which most people these days seem to be fine with

2023-10-05 20:31:19 +0000 UTCYeah can always be shield to go against the Dub suggestion people. There is even more valid excuse you can make to people advocating for Dub. It's scientifically proven that countries that use DUB for shows compared to Subs have people more dumber than countries where they use subtitles and release the shows in original audio. Like personally for me as easy example, my english is very good because my Arnold Schwarzenegger movies weren't dubbed movies, but I could actually hear his broken english for "Bullshit".

2023-10-05 20:23:33 +0000 UTCI just want to point about Chinese DUB or just language. I literally have nothing against the language or anything, but for my own ears how they speak it just make me feel like somebody is scraping the chalkboard. I still listen to it if that is the original audio for the show.

2023-10-05 20:19:15 +0000 UTCYeah if this poll would change you guys watching anime in DUB would be deal breaker for myself. Would wish you the best for these years, but my own personal policy for any show is to watch in the original voice it was supposed to be. So like watching Castlevania in english is not bad, because that is the OG language for the show creators. But Japanese anime is supposed to be watched with Japanese VA's. Or you guys watching KDrama in some weird English DUB.
Thamor
2023-10-05 20:18:44 +0000 UTCFor older stuff I usually prefer whatever language I heard it in first. For better or worse that is just what the charecters are supposed to sound like in my head. Outside of that I would say I prefer dub if it is done well with a good cast that keeps the intended vibes.
Maseter
2023-10-05 20:07:33 +0000 UTCIt depends on the series. There are some anime that are better in dub, like Cyberpunk Edgerunners or DBZ (sorry fanboys, I'm more or less fluent in Japanese and english DBZ dialogues are definitely WAY BETTER than the original); but for some other animes the dub may lack in the intensity that the Japanese voice actors put into their lines. So it really depends on the anime. I'd say english dialogues are better for humor and wittiness while Japanese voices are usually better for raw emotion. But some english dubs also managed to put raw emotions into it too (the FMA Brotherhood's Lust death scene for example).
Didier
2023-10-05 19:59:53 +0000 UTCI prefer dub. I'm a slow reader and if a show has a lot of fast dialog, i have to pause to read and re-read a lot of the time. It takes away from the enjoyment. I also dont really get some of the sub dialog b/c of the cultural and language structure differences. I'll admit, there are some dubs with a VA cast that just dosn't do it that well. But there are some dubs (Kaguya-Love is war as an example), where the dub cast is just really good. I'll default to watching a dub if its available, if not, I'll still watch the sub either way.
Nathan
2023-10-05 19:59:38 +0000 UTCIf something has a good dub I will usually default to that because I prefer not having to read and being able to take in everything being animated, but if it’s a show I’m watching live or the dub is bad then I’m completely fine with watching sub. Honestly I find the whole debate about it exhausting.

2023-10-05 19:51:54 +0000 UTCThe only anime where I've preferred Dub over Sub was Hetalia, Pokemon, Beyblade, Digimon & Yu-Gi-Oh (and the last 4 I didn't even know were anime at the time I was watching them which explains why XD)
Shadow
2023-10-05 19:48:00 +0000 UTC100% always original language. I hate chinese dub so much, but I still watch the show in chinese if the original language was chinese (Quan zi Gao Shou, Quan Zi Fa Shi etc), Korean for korean shows and English for shows like avatar, or western shows in general. (I tried using japanese dubs on games that aren't originally japanese either like assassin's creed but I couldn't stand it.) Another example is I was okay with One Piece live action in English, But I watched Rorouni Kenshin live action in Japanese. But if the anime is in Japanese it should always be in japanese. For example I was really enjoying your FMAB reaction until It suddenly changed to english dub, I dropped it almost immidiately. I tried to finish the episode but I just couldn't. If I really had to sometimes I open the anime in Japanese dub on another monitor while watching you guys react which is really not a comfortable watch. Not to mention jokes and references getting lost in translation sometimes. I watched so much japanese shows that I can pretty much pick up 80% of the dialogue even without reading subs. If i had a japanese person I could practice with I am confident I will be able to speak(not read) japanese comfortably in a few months.

2023-10-05 19:46:00 +0000 UTCDub I think people just don't understand how Japanese language is rooted with emotion so I never consider awesome I just understand it's part of them so them yelling or speaking doesn't make me.go oh my God it's amazing I just watch it dub gets hate cuz it's easier to hear are selves speak and judge plus the English language Isn't spoken with emotion.

Rusty
2023-10-05 19:27:24 +0000 UTCOriginal Language for 98% of all shows (live action, anime, animated, cartoon). I just feel that the original language is always superior simply because the show was created to fit that language/culture. There are exceptions or at least dubbing that may prove to be just as good or good enough. But rarely would you see a foreign language be better than the original. In anime, Death Note is a good example of a very good english dub. But the japanese dub is still just as good or better imo. But the english is one of the few where I can say it's very good. Otherwise, sub all the way.

DjSKitZ
2023-10-05 19:08:02 +0000 UTCSub personally, the voice acting and emotion in sub just feels a lot more natural, although some series have really good dubs like FMA + after so many anime I'm sure everybody who watches the sub has a tiny understanding of japanese and feels like they can pick up words/meanings from what/how something is being said if the subtiles aren't very good.

2023-10-05 19:04:53 +0000 UTCI have a question for anyone picking English Dubs. Is English your first language? It's subs for me. Really, I've always preferred things on their original language (with a few exceptions). Eg: I wouldn't watch Star Wars dubbed in my native language.
Pyzlnar
2023-10-05 18:55:15 +0000 UTCSub. Context gets lost in translation and sub actors put way more emotion and emphasize into their characters out of the hundreds and hundreds of anime I’ve watched both dub and sub there are only about 5 I would choose the dub over the sub

2023-10-05 18:49:39 +0000 UTCI prefer sub 99% of the time. There are exceptions where I strongly prefer the dub (Dragon Ball series and Full Metal Alchemist come to mind right now). The My Hero dub is good, too. I've watched it both ways but usually do the sub.
Darksteel78
2023-10-05 18:48:48 +0000 UTCI'm a dub person. Maybe I'm weird but I just don't get how some people say some dubs sound weird and cheesy when literally the OG also sounds weird and cheesy too. Part of it is disconnect since it is easier to notice weird words and inflections in our natural tongue than it is in another language. Many dubs do suck but there are quite a few where the acting is amazing with real passion. For me a dub has to be incredibly bad or the sub incredibly good in order for me to pick subs. For instance AoT is sub only because it is just too epic. But shows like Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo have fantastic dubs. And I may get hate for this but I prefer One Piece dubbed. Not all of the voices in dub One Piece are good but all the Straw Hats are absolutely perfect (I actually heavily prefer Franky's dub voice. that scene with him against the Puffing Tom gives me chills with the emotion he exhibits). The only exception is Luffy. And tbf Mayumi Tanaka's voice is not just incredible and perfect but is also too unique to really copy without sounding like some kind of parody. Colleen definitely sounds really off in comparison but she knew she couldn't compete and instead tried to keep the overall spirit and emotions of Luffy without changing her own voice too much to where it sounds unnatural. Not as good but as good as a dub could be.

2023-10-05 18:46:09 +0000 UTCi'm sorry but sub. most of japanese VA are on another level, plus dialogue are meant to make sense in original and convey messages better. there are some decent exceptions tho, so you could maybe watch dub on a rewatch to get a new experience. not for me anyway, i find it cringe 99% of the time

2023-10-05 18:34:45 +0000 UTCFor the most part I prefer Anime in the original language with subtitles. However there are instances where the English dub is preferable to me. Sometimes it's on account of how good the English voice actors are, such as in the case with Steins:Gate, Ace Attorney and Sailor Moon. Unfortunately there's also those occurrences where the VAs for the sub is so bad that English is the preferred choice. I for one can't stand Goku's Japanese VA, which is like nails on a chalkboard to me, and since Crunchyroll seems to only have Dragonball Super in Japanese sub that means I have to watch it instead on Hulu for the English dub. So yeah, it really depends on the anime.
