I think the time period is based on the late Meiji period in Japan so maybe around 1910. It was a time of reconstruction and industrialization. lots of western influence. Also based on the cars, the trollies, knob and tube electrical wiring and the old style of phones but only shown in rich homes.

Mios Dad married Sumi Usuba (Mios mom) for politics/power while Kanako (Kayas mom) was his lover at the time that he actually cared for, unable to go against his family he married Sumi only to go back to his former lover as soon as she passed, and of course married her and made a child with her, Kaya. That's one of the reasons Kanako hates Mio so much, cause in her she sees the woman that took her man away from her. That's why she said to Mio this episode "You sure are the daughter of that conniving thief".

Idrk why, seems pretty obvious in retrospect what actually happened, and it makes way more sense. I was pretty confused with the whole story at first just because of that one mix up

By marrying the eldest son, who is expected to be the next head of the Tatsuishi household, Miyo would move from her father's house to the Tatsuishi house. Instead, Miyo's dad sent her over to the Kudou family to marry Kiyoka.

I’ve never attached to a MC so quickly like she MUST be protected at all costs. Thinking about starting the manga too, the panels I’ve seen look gorgeous and I’m too impatient to wait on new episodes 😂
