Firefly is a classic!! Sci fi western style, one season, with a movie to end the series. Perfect for a watch a long without too much commitment. Someone mentioned Fringe which is also great sci fi show (in my top 5, i was obsessedwith that show). For a totally different flavor Banshee is EXCELLENT!! Crime drama.... y'all would most def be into it.
