The discussion reminded me of a fun fact about ninjas: what we think of as "Ninja outfit" came from Kabuki theatre. The stagehands wore black outfits which were meant to help one fade into the background. These outfits were a signal to the audience that they shouldn't look at those people, they were only there to change set pieces and weren't really 'there' in the play. One production featured an assassin character, who wore stagehand garb before attacking their target and revealing themselves. It was a way of stylistically representing the ninja was invisible, attacking out of nowhere. It became famous and now is why we think of ninjas all wearing the same thing. Real ninja wore whatever outfits avoided attention, as you said.
