I actually was surprised to find out she was 19! She always struck me as older!

2025-08-30 07:48:33 +0000 UTCTime skips or jumps can be a bit tricky for me to fully grasp. ⌛ This anime often jumps over significant stretches of time without really pointing it out. We mainly get to witness the exciting moments of Maomao's life, while everything else is largely overlooked. There are times when weeks or perharps months pass by without any notable events. In the first episode, we find her in the Jade Pavillon three months later, and she mentions later on that the prince passed away a month after she shared the info with Gyokuyou. She spent two months at the Crystal Pavilion, and if you factor in the preparation time for the Garden Party, like making the pockets and all, that probably adds a couple of weeks too. I'm curious about how often she sees Jinshi during her week. It’s possible that there are stretches of one or two weeks where she doesn’t see him at all. For her, though, even a single encounter feels like too much since she’s not exactly a fan of having him around. 🤣

I get the reasoning behind it for the story and Maomao's character, but I'm still frustrated; she was one-of-a-kind and delightful. Is it a temporary or permanent change? 😢 As you mentioned, Sophie, freckles were viewed as "ugly" back then, seen as a mark of low class due to sun exposure from labor. I believe that on some individuals, freckles can be quite appealing (Lucy Liu, Emma Watson, etc.). 🤩 That said, it can be hard to tell on some darker-skinned Asian girls whether they are freckles, sun spots or blemishes. By the way there's a cool relationship between the doctor and Maomao that has been building up to this episode. If it were just Maomao in the infirmary, there's a good chance her thoughts would be brushed aside. What I appreciate about the doctor is how he advocates for Maomao, using his position and privilege to support her. The guard talks to the doctor, but the doctor quickly turns to Maomao for her thoughts in a way that respects her. He doesn't mind that she might be more skilled than he is—he even gives her props. Instead, he sits down with the guard, who we might think would feel more at ease chatting with the doctor while Maomao is within earshot.
