Uncut Frieren Ep 27

Comments

The frieren-serie relationship was wonderfully fleshed out in this episode. Despite how curt they are to each other in their previous interactions, with two short lines of speech it is revealed how they understand and respect each other intimately- frieren knowing that serie would pass fern no matter what, and serie instantly deducing that frieren coached fern. The two elves come across not so much as rivals, but rather as petty professors or scientists that have a political disagreement on the future of their academic field.

This is one of my favorite episodes and the only thing I would change is the comment Serie makes about Lernen not being able to detect her mana fluctuations. I feel like if it weren’t revealed until Fern remarks upon it, it would feel like a much bigger moment. By having that internal monologue from Serie reveal it ahead of time you immediately expect some kind of payoff and what makes the most sense is exactly what happens here, so it feels a bit like getting spoiled by the episode itself. Maybe that’s just me though

Serie epitomizes "tsundere", she represents what Frieren would be like if she never joined Himmel and the gang. Although Serie may first appear emotionally distant like Frieren, she is actually quite in tune with her feelings for her students. Her sharp and bitter attitude mirrors that of traditional, old-school Asian parents who often show their care in indirect or tough-love manners. Serie’s true emotions become more evident in later episodes. In contrast, Frieren is not suppressing her emotions—she simply has yet to comprehend her own feelings. Serie’s character embodies a form of affection frequently found in Asian narratives. Serie cares deeply for all her students, even if it doesn't seem that way at first glance. She feels a sense of disappointment that Lernen will soon pass away, despite being at his peak. She has protected Sense from responsibility by placing the blame on Frieren, and she is teaching Land the glass dude. Even though she claims she will never grasp Flamme's essence, it was essentially her who conveyed Flamme's dream to Frieren in great detail when she was a child. Although she describes it as an inefficient spell, she is likely the one who instructed Flamme in mana suppression, or at the very least, she learned it after Flamme's death. The only person I believe Serie is genuinely disappointed in is Frieren, as Frieren has not taken any action in the 1000 years since she left her original forest. She only became active when Himmel sought her out, and then spent 80-90 years merely collecting spells. This is why Frieren realizes that Serie is not the mage she aspires for her to be, as Frieren is meant to be stronger than her current self. I love how Serie is practically an overdemanding "grandmother" completely disappointed that her "granddaughter" has spent most of her life wasting her talents by learning "useless" things. She literally sees her as a hippie 🧝‍♂️☮️🌺

Ohhhh I actually never thought of that scene in that way before! I actually thought Serie displayed her mana the way Demons did, as a sort of "status." However in her case she's showing off most of it, but secretly concealing a small amount. Since she said it was foolish of Flamme to do such a thing I had assumed Flamme invented the technique, not Serie. And Serie being Serie I figured she would never admit to Flamme or anyone that it was actually a good idea and so would secretly be concealing a small amount of her mana, kinda like training in secret.

I just can't wrap my head around Serie lol her personality is so confusing to me. I can't tell what she truly likes or dislikes and it makes me feel unsure of how to feel about her as a character. Maybe I'm thick and just misunderstanding her intentions or the deeper meaning of her character lol. I just feel like I like her but at the same time I dont like her lol

Fern truly is something else. Lernen, the first first class mage, who is now close to the end of his lifetime can barely see the fluctuation in frieren's mana, and is still unable to see the same on serie's, yet fern, who is barely 18 or 19 can already see the fluctuation in serie's mana, so that speaks volumes to the heights that she can and will reach during her life.

Also, this episode shows how powerful Serie is. In episode 10, Flamme teaches Frieren to conceal 90% of her mana and only show the remaining 10%, so Serie is likely showing only 10% of her mana as well. Now Lernen (who couldn't tell that Serie is concealing her mana) says that Frieren (who is not concealing her mana) has the same amount of mana as Serie (who is concealing hers). With some quick math, that means Serie has ten times more mana than Frieren. Serie is truly terrifying. 💀

Serie: training how to restrict mana is inefficient and a waste of time...it's a shame Lernen never saw through me doing precisely that....I really shouldn't take on human students....*Fern, was it? Be my student* 🤣 Serie kills me but I love her character haha. It's so beautiful how understanding and communication is conveyed through magic in this episode. Obviously Frieren's flower spell to put at ease child Himmel but also Richter realizing the importance of Fern's staff via seeing how well it was maintained during his spell to repair it

Oh wonderful! I've had a rough day and this will cheer me up : )
