Uncut Frieren Ep 19

Comments

But that's not what was said. Yes - there may be advancements on magic but there's tradition and dedication to those spells that don't exist in the others flashier magic. Hence why Fern's technique and magic is seen as 'old' as akin to 'her grandfather' rather than modern and adaptive. The defence spells were created by humanity. We know that. So everyone is aware of it not just Fern. Fern's magic is classed as the older and more traditional sense of magic because that's the way the dialogue is portraying it. Hence the focus on 'traditional' because it's an older form that may have been adapted but is likely considered 'outdated' by new, flashier techniques being developed that don't always hold up because no one is honing or mastering the older, more refined techniques that withstand the test of time. Also wasn't a conclusion regarding magic. It was an analysis based on the dialogue and the focus on age in relation to Fern's magic being compared to that of a grandfather, emphasising that Fern's techniques are classed as outdated in the new realm of magic development even if they are powerful. Zoltraak has been widely available to all mages since it was reverse engineered. It's also not new if it was developed 80 to 90 years ago. It very much seems to be something developed shortly after the Demon King's defeat. So in the grand scheme of perspective it's not a new spell but an older form of traditional magic in the perspective of a new generation of mages who are honing what they believe to be unique, flashier magic. Zoltraak would be the magic of their grandparents generation. You seem to be a bit confused by what I'm saying. I'm saying that the magic developed in the last 90 years would be considered older and outdated to newer mages, but they overlook the power and significance it actually holds because they shrug it off as magic associated with the older generation rather than something they should master and hone themselves. Fern proves that these spells remain incredibly powerful if mastered.

I have to push back on your conclusion regarding magic. You said she what good is a flashy technique if it doesn't hold up against centuries of technique and magic. But Frieren's fighting style is basic offense and basic defense, two spells that were developed within the last 90 years. Basic offence (zoltraak) was made by the demon Qual and reverse engineered by Frieren along with other human mages during or after her time with Himmel's party (it's not entirely clear). And the basic defence spell was developed as a way to counter zoltraak because at the time zoltraak was able to pierce most defensive spells, so a new defensive spell was developed to defend against it. So, in reality, Fern is being taught the new, state of the art spells. In this respect, magic is a lot like weapons history in real life. The development of semi-automatic firearms revolutionized modern warfare. Traditional warfare that had been used for centuries was hard pressed to gain a foothold. Zoltraak heavily revolutionized magic warfare. From Fern's choice of words, I suspect that older magic hasn't completely been made obsolete, but it gets put in the back seat.

Frieren is awesome. I really like the tone and pacing of the previous episodes, but this Äußerst arc is just too good!
