iOS App

It's come to my attention that Apple is charging more for people to subscribe to Patreon via the iOS app.

For example my highest tier is $10 and that's what it is on the web/browser. In iOS app you're being charged $14.50 and 30% of that goes to Apple not the creator you are choosing to support. Apple also forces creators to wait 2 and a half months before we even see the income generated from app purchases.

For the sake of your own bank account just subscribe via the browser on your phone and then login into the app once your subscription is complete. I don't want anyone to be paying more than they should for my content solely because of Apple's greed!

Thought I'd leave this here in case people didn't realise that Apple is charging more for my content than I actually am whilst pocketing the difference!!

Wow, I had heard about issues with Apple charging app developers for the "privilege" of distributing their apps through the App Store, and there have been legal issues the past few years if I recall. Yep, I think it was Epic Store challenging and not wanting to pay Apple the exorbitant 30% fee or something similar, and I vaguely recall other companies too and lawsuits, at least here in the States. Also, I believe it was covered in news outlets, podcasts, etc., a couple years back how smaller developers and businesses are forced to pay out the ass to have any presence in the Apple Store, while not even close to the same in other platforms, but the details escape me right now. I know there was talk of U.S. and European regulators scrutinizing. In fact, looking it up now, a class action lawsuit last week, from Reuters, the headline: " Apple hit with app developer class action after US judge’s contempt ruling. " It goes on.... "Apple should return hundreds of millions of dollars to developers who claim the iPhone maker defied a U.S. judge’s order governing its lucrative App Store, causing them to pay inflated commissions for more than a year, a new lawsuit said...." Another article and headline: " US judge rules Apple violated order to reform App Store " It goes on.... " Apple (AAPL.O), violated a U.S. court order that required the iPhone maker to allow greater competition for app downloads and payment methods in its lucrative App Store and will be referred to federal prosecutors, a federal judge in California ruled on Wednesday....." There has been coverage of these companies taking a lot of sales "commissions" from developers, and I guess the "costs" are now or were always passed on to consumers and people wanting to support creators, driving up the costs for everything while more money should be going toward developers and creators. It's just the "Apple Tax" for their overpriced products.

I don't believe so. It just appears to be iOS. I believe Android App's don't charge additional.

Does the Android app have a similar issue? I don't use mobile apps to access Patreon, but was wondering if Google Play Store may also charge a similar fee

Fingers crossed. I haven't used an Apple Product since my early 20s so I don't tend to pay much attention to them but seeing the topic pop up on reddit I was like "hold on a god damn minute!"

That goes for most in-app purchases on iOS, by the way. There's an on-going anti-competition lawsuit involving Riot Games and Apple because Riot found a loophole, taking customers out of their apps to make purchases at a discount. The suit has gone Riot's way, but I believe Apple can appeal. Hopefully it wont be long before their monopoly ends.

Thank you

Definitely make the renewal via browser!! Whether someone subscribes via iOS or browser - I earn the same amount. The difference is that iOS is charging more than what my content actually costs and pocketing the additional money. I don't want anyone to be out of pocket because of them. It's absolutely crazy!

Thank you for pointing this out Sophie. $10 is already a bit expensive on my part since it’s PHP to $, so if ios is charging more, I won’t be able to sustain monthly sub. I’ll make the renewal via browser. Thanks and have a great day!

Yeah - Twitch was horrendous. Even worse because it was their own app too!

Dr Sophie Darling Reacts

Fucks sake, its like the Twitch apologise charging more to subscribe to people, it's silly
