Uncut AOT 3 x 20

My most paused episode yet!

Comments

Some etymological explanations that have been discussed in the fandom. They are mere speculations that won't affect the plot, and I don't know if they have been confirmed by the author or not: - Marley in Japanese is pronounced "mare" which could be from the Italian "mare" meaning "sea". - Eldia in Japanese is pronounced "Erudia" which could be from the German "Erde" meaning "earth". Ymir made a contract with the devil of all "earth". - Zeke in Japanese is pronounced "zeeku" which could from the German word "Sieg" (pronounced "zeek") which means "victory". In this episode, Grischa lifted his newborn son and said that he would bring "victory".

Ideophagous

"War is a cruel parent, but an effective teacher. Its final lesson is carved deep in my psyche: that this world, and all of its people, are diseased... Expose someone to anger long enough, they will learn to hate. They become a carrier. Envy, greed, despair—all memes, all passed on." I'm glad that you're seeing both sides of this story as being just as bad as the other. The pot calling the kettle black or so to speak. They've all been fed convenient half-truths—information they passed on to their children to continue the cycle of hatred, of bloodshed, of war. All in the name of "justice". Ah, but justice often gets confused with revenge... but was there ever a line to begin with?

The Voidger

A lot of the comments here seem to be talking about a supposed humanisation of Mr. ickyGross or whatever but I think they're sort of missing the mark. I don't think the show is trying to imply a hypocritical viewer for being happy with ickygross's death mostly because the cycle as described should only apply to enacting revenge on people who had nothing to do with the violence of their ancestors, not, you know, the guy who brutally murdered a little girl.

Merry

just puts the initial setting into a whole new perspective, its basically a new show from here on, everything up to now is completely changed in retrospect

HAL

zekes name sounding like the german word for victory and his fathers first words t ohim bieng "one day you'll lead us all to victory"... well that worked out just great

HAL

14:40 well, erens father is a child here, if its 80 years at that point its gonna be around 100 years by episode 1

HAL

eren defeating hte collossal titan was basically the climactic moment we expected to see at the end whe nwe saw the firs tepisode and now its basically a tragic moemnt before we even know what the show is really about

HAL

gotta hold abck fro mspoiling the titan counting/naming segment, as soon as we got that number we all tried figuring out how many we've seen, what ocutns as one and how many more there will be

HAL

in such a morally complex story one of the few really evil cahracters being a critique of the audience is kinda funny

HAL

They gave small hints. Places where the camera focused him during other people's conversations and more directly, when he covered Grisha's mouth to not reveal Dina was of royal heritage. That pretty much gave it away for me. Still, not criticizing, was funny, just that. But when one sees this episode, the head is always gonna be all over the place, impossible not to miss something ^^

Lemon

Watched the first 2 episodes today and holy hell S4 is going to be phenomenal!!

Sophie Anders

it was sooo cute watching you trying to name the 9 titans lol tbh everyone did that. have you started s4 yet? if so, congrats you finished the prologue, time for the main story lol. also, dont know if you were told yet but s4 was animated by a different studio so stuff might look a bit different but its more true to the manga source manga/material.

smem

Ngl you be helping me understand this show way better. I could have benefitted from these kinds of discussions/explanations while watching these episodes the first time.

Mina E.D

I have? It's on Patreon and the edited version is on YT. Part 1 & 2 are under AOT OVA.

Sophie Anders

Always love how perceptive and well-spoken you are!

tonkatsu

If you have the time you should watch Annies OVA to get more context

mikaren 918

@Mesbah Mohamady - Which one were you thinking about? Cause the slow eating Titan in s2 ep2 shouldn't have been in s1. Those Titans within Wall Rose originated from Ragako Village.

Terry C

He's renowned as being one of the best in terms of AOT Reactions for insight and analysis so it's extremely high praise from David to see my content as on par or better! :')

Sophie Anders

Omg you are so good 🤣! You’re quick to ask why. Perception is 💯

vxctorrr

So excited for next ss'! So im team Zeke.

Zarayut Ziri

I don't know filmbuff so now you have sparked my curiosity and check it out 👀

Mickael Landry

Hey everyone, let’s keep things spoiler-free please! It’s way more fun for all of us if Sophie can dive into her theories and reactions without any hints. Speaking of puzzle pieces, finding out the true lore/plot of this show, I like to say to new fans that after Season 1, you know 5% of the whole picture After Season 2, it's 20% After Season 3, it's 50% And after it all....you'll just have to wait and see! 😛

Mickael Landry

Which is what I said by you could presume but we didn't know for sure that it was possible to possess 2 Titans simultaneously until 3 x 21.

Sophie Anders

I don't think they're being rude? It just didn't need to be cleared up as I understood the difference very clearly because I distinguished between them and even recognised that Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt are Eldians. I said Marley took control of 7 titans but I knew that was through using the Subjects of Ymir. I think your comment could be seen as holding my hand on something I didn't fail to understand which wasn't really necessary. I appreciate what you're trying to do but if I am confused on anything I will ask for clarification 😊

Sophie Anders

I've finished S3 😊 I need to watch the last part of Lost Girls and the first ep of S4 today!

Sophie Anders

God it's hard I won't lie 🙈 I'm at the point of struggling but I reply where and when I can!

Sophie Anders

We'd only ever seen him once so I don't see how I was expected to guess who he truly was tbh 😂 I'm good but I'm not so good as to get everything on a first watch, you know? Yeah the realisation that there's more than what we've seen is wild!!

Sophie Anders

I was gonna comment earlier in the seasons and compare you to filmbuff and say you're the woman counterpart of him LOL but you might even be better XD This is for sure gonna be one of the best aot reactions out there. Cant wait till you get to season 4

david

what the hell? i was just trying to clear things up incase she didn't catch that, why are you all so rude?

FireflyEye

So many of her earlier predictions came true in this episode for sure :)

AK

Absolutely AMAZING reaction and breakdown! Out of curiosity, what is the latest episode you have watched at this point (real time)?

AK

I believe that the show honestly actually begins in season 4 and that seasons 1-3 are pretty much just exposition for the main plot 😂

KrakenKing

There you go again predicting everything 😭😭😭

shintesu shini

This is my second favorite episode in the series. It's deep on so many levels, and I could discuss the nuances and how they relate to past scenes in retrospect for hours. Did you peep the toy Zeke was playing with just before Grisha walked in to indoctorinate him? It was a toy gorilla! So happy to see you get here and can't wait for the next drop!

Jordan

Also, a fun fact that you should keep in mind is that the manga’s run lasted almost 13 years. You’ll understand why.

Szaleos

Season 4 is right around the corner, and I’m so excited! With the studio change from WIT to MAPPA, you’ll see more CGI Titans, which can be jarring at first. Oh, you’re late to the party. This last season was so good that it became mainstream, with people celebrating each week when a new episode dropped. We rarely get to see this amount of hype for an anime—it truly is the anime of the decade. The first three seasons were fairly popular in the anime community, but Season 4 skyrocketed in popularity—and for good reason.

Szaleos

How do you keep up with the comments? It feels like almost a full time job in and of itself XD Loved seeing you finally get here and see all of the things you got right! It's such a great feeling to be both validated and see all the new questions the series offers you after this lore dump!

Anna Kyruin

Who else could the king have named the walls he built after? It's like naming a Mercedes after his daughter. But I'm not sure if this is true because I'm watching it for the first time.

Super Nenechi

It's one of her theories, if you read her timeline documents. She doesn't know, she suspects.

Anna Kyruin

Oh Sophie, today you broke me! ahah Guessing Dina is the smilling titan(with so many other predictions) and being oblivious to the fact that soldier is "The Owl" is hilarious xD (in a good way). But logic at the same time, so much information, that one went over your head. Be proud of all you guessed ^^ Still, this episode, is huge. When suddently the entire world expands, you finally learn that Paradise/Paradis is but a small little island in the world. The feeling when one first learns this, shocking! This show! <3

Lemon

Asher Mair

Oh wow thanks for the quick response! I'm looking forward to the rest of season 3 and the wild ride that is season 4. And haha your mentioning of Reiner's admiration for Historia made me recall all the "gotta marry her" lines and made me smile

Russell Gambardella

I think I do venture into this in my intro to 3 x 22 but I can't be sure because I filmed almost a week ago. My mind hasn't changed too much I don't think. I still think Reiner might be hardened based on what happened with Bertholdt but I think something may also force him to begin to understand that he is also the same as those within the walls, and that he needs to work with them to create a better future. He has a lot of love and admiration for Historia and I think that will be significant going forward.

Sophie Anders

WOOOOO WE MADE IT! I'm so happy you got confirmation of many of your hard worked theories after the tease of last episode haha. It's truly incredible how much you correctly inferred from your past analysis. I also specifically loved 1) Your immediate empathy for Zeke and questioning/speculation of why Zeke would betray his parents (I've seen so many people not even pose this question, let alone fail to be critical of Grisha's parenting) and 2) Your appreciation for the brilliant reveal that the Warriors are also Eldians and how that adds so many more layers to the story and further explains Reiner's, Annnie's, and Berthold's thoughts and inner conflicts. Now that this has been revealed, I'm curious if you would make any changes to your prediction (a few episodes ago) on regarding what happens with Reiner's character moving forward? With this new information, Berthold gone, and Annie out of the picture, I'm sure you are already making tons of clever speculations and would love to hear any thoughts you have in perhaps your intro to 4x1 or 4x2 if you haven't already filmed them. I'm SUPER excited for the rest of this series!!!! :)

Russell Gambardella

Thank you Alex!!

Sophie Anders

This lady is incredible. I hope you know that Sophie. Seeing you get super giddy and excited gives me great joy. Well done

Alex Mercer

Whilst the psychological critique on the viewer is interesting - I do think there's a difference between those celebrating the deaths of Bertholdt and wanting the downfall of everyone whose deemed a threat to the walls which is revelling in violence and those who celebrate the death of a single man who tortured a young girl to death. Both are cruel but I'd argue that one is vengeance. I don't revel in the violence because I enjoy it but because I believe he deserves some repercussions for what he did to Faye. Then again - that in itself is the replication of violence that we are seeing so even as I'm writing this I'm thinking further into it. Grisha wants revenge for the sins of the past which only contributes to the ongoing cycle. Likewise, I wanted revenge for the child that was murdered cruelly for simply existing in this world as an Eldian. Gross believes that all Eldian's should pay for their sins too for massacring his people throughout history. I guess deep down all humans are awful and predisposed to violence or at least revelling in it even if we don't wish to see ourselves that way. I left the first part in to show my stream of consciousness just as a heads up haha! I decipher things better when writing so as I was writing I was like "oh hold up a second" more so than verbally!

Sophie Anders

Thanks for a great reaction! 👏 I believe you're the first Sophie I've come across who isn't feeling too overwhelmed after this episode. A lot of people had to watch it at least twice to grasp what was happening. Crazy how up until this point each time we've said "for humanity" it wasn't really for humanity but for the Eldians within the walls. We now have an answer to the question "who is the real enemy?" it's humanity itself!!! 🤯 I have always understood a slight difference between Eldians and subjects of Ymir. Eldians existed before Ymir Fritz, so they are simply Eldians. Once Ymir Fritz entered the storyline, made her deal with the devil, gained Titan powers, and procreated, she became the “mother of modern Eldia” and her Eldian descendants became Subjects of Ymir. The speech the officer gives about cruelty being more interesting was spoken to both Grisha and us as the audience (he's looking directly into camera, addressing the viewers as well). Then, when he gets kicked off the wall and eaten by a titan, most of the audience celebrates. You did the exact same thing that he condemned the officer for. 😜 If everything was sunshine and roses, we wouldn't be as engaged as we are and binging episode after episode. We're being accused of watching to witness the cruelty of the world these characters were born into and learn how it shapes all of them, because that's what's 'interesting'. Isayama is brilliant. 🧠

Mickael Landry

Yeah I won't lie - I'm a TAD worried about watching other anime after this haha!!

Sophie Anders

Crazy how you got a lot of things right! Great job! 👏 Personally, I haven’t read or watched anything like AoT. This episode alone shows a lot of nuances of humanity that I haven’t seen other stories do and it’s going to be a while until I see something like this again

Sally

you could argue, that it could be guessed that Krugers/Grishas/Eren Titan was a different entity than the Founding Titan, as we saw those two fight each other with Grisha vs Frida

Ricardo

I don't cheer for people to die in this show but I cheered for him because he killed an innocent child. Grisha deserved to avenge his sister against someone like that whose perspective would never change. But yes - the critique is fascinating nonetheless.

Sophie Anders

True - we're replicating the cycle of violence. But against someone like that? I'd happily replicate it after what he did to an innocent child.

Sophie Anders

I've seen this episode explained really well on a youtube comment, that I found so profound I thought I'd share it with you guys as well: "One thing that always striked me was Gross's speech at the wall about how people feel about this need for cruelty and horror when they live in relative peace. The dialogue between him and Grisha is almost a direct hit to the viewer and when Gross speaks, he looks directly at the camera, talking to us. Grisha's question about the pleasure on watching people being eaten by titans can also be asked to us, that watch the show. And it strikes me how we are so grossed out with Gross's speech on how he can reason and accept giving people to titans and then a little later we cheer for when he's thrown to the titan. In a way the show calls us out on our hypocrisy and the double standards the same way Gross creates this double standard for the Eldians and Marleyans"

Kyra Sun

"Because it's interesting... you know, people actually want to see cruelty" He says while staring directly at the camera, staring at the audience so to speak. The audience that watched all the gruesome violence and needless suffering, that are probably cheering for this guy to die a horrible death.

Antonio

I absolutely agree with you. It's why I love that quote I see every time I go into Belfast about keeping one eye on the past is a form of learning and growth but keeping both eyes on the past keeps you stagnant and doomed to repeat the cycles of violence that came before. We have to find other ways in which to engage with others and to find common ground when it often feels impossible to do so due to the weight of history.

Sophie Anders

It seems thinking critically + independently in both Marley and pre-coup d'état Paradis Island is extremely discouraged by the elites

Dagmar Makara

Honestly please do feel free to comment haha!! Though I always suggest to people to be as VAGUE as possible because sometimes I read too much into comments too haha! I'm a nightmare for it :P

Sophie Anders

The only thing I didn't catch was Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt being Eldians!!! But now thinking back on past dialogue I'm like "omg yes it all makes sense!!"

Sophie Anders

why can't some people finish the video and let her get through her thoughts before leaving a comment 😭

GS

I’m glad it at least wasn’t anything too major 🥺 I will be duct taping my mouth shut now haha

JenniHongyu

Watching this was very very very Cathartic !!! It was like watching you at a bowling alley having every theory or suspicion confirmed with a perfect strike! 💛

Merry

It's a minor one so don't worry too much. I was like 99% sure I was right anyway on that because of the familial connection when Historia was crowned. But yeah from around 3 x 3 I suspected that Rose, Maria, and Sina were Ymir and Fritz's daughters due to the way the walls are named in honour of them. They had to be of significance to earn such reverence.

Sophie Anders

Haha it's fine! I actually went back to check if I was maybe mistaking it because I know it shows up twice. It eats one of Eren's comrades when he goes after the abnormal that kills Thomas.

Sophie Anders

oh my goodness I’m so sorry! I misunderstood and didn’t realize it was still just a theory. I must have missed that bit from your previous video. I apologize again. I feel awful :((

JenniHongyu

Yes, you are absolutely right I misunderstood

Mesbah Mohamady

Yes, it is. It's the one that attacks Sasha when she misses in the basement when they are collecting gas in S1 to refuel their ODM gear. Mikasa brings it down. You're thinking I'm talking about the Titan in 2 x 2.

Sophie Anders

That last pure titan was not the one who was about to eat Sasha It is a different one but it also appeared in season 1 as one of the pure titans that went inside Trost after Berthold destroyed the gate of wall Rose in episode 4

Mesbah Mohamady

I didn't. I'd theorised the familial relation for a while due to the significance of their names within this society focused on monarchy and lineage but you've just straight up confirmed that I'm right... This isn't the first time that I've mentioned my theory in relation to Rose, Maria, and Sina in 3 x 3. Please be careful of confirming ANYTHING with future comments. Until the show confirms it I am always speaking from my theories and not as fact.

Sophie Anders

Oh damn how did you know the names of the daughters already?

JenniHongyu

I know? The show told me that. Don't worry. I caught that and more!

Sophie Anders

to be clear: those titans were possessed by Eldians who lived in and served Marley, not Marleyans. Marleyans and people of other races can't transform into pure or intelligent titans.

FireflyEye

The titans Marley had at the time of Grisha's childhood: Colossal, Armored, Female, Beast, the titan Marcel and later Ymir had, the quadruped titan, and one other that you will see later.

FireflyEye

Finally the timeline paid off lol! It was crazy for me to see how much you were spot on in your predictions from such early on! From that moment I knew you understood what AoT is about, and honestly I can't wait for your reactions and discussions on season 4. I bet we'll see a lot of 1hr+ discussion videos lol! Oh and your questions about Zeke will turn into one of the best and most conflicting episodes of AoT! Just leaving this here hehe.

GabrielLGXD

I cannot bloody wait for Tuesday hehehehehhe

Benedict

I didn't miss the Marleyans? When I refer to the Warriors THAT was who I was referring to as a race of people because I didn't have a name for them until this point. I knew there was another race of people intent on replicating the past. I've talked about that since S2 that it's been very evident there's an ethnonationalist conflict going on. I've also talked about a potential genocide committed by the First King on this other race way ahead of S3 too. Yes - I couldn't name them but I knew of their existence. What I didn't know was that Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt were NOT Marleyans but actually Eldians. I've routinely spoken about trauma and the replication of violence because it's passed down from generation to generation especially around S2 when Reiner had a moment of split that caused Bertholdt concern. So I wouldn't say that I missed it at all. The piece that was missing was that Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt were not Marleyans but were being used for their bloodline to inflict war upon the Eldians which was hidden extremely well but even now past dialogue makes more sense to me. Even in 3 x 12 I discussed how I believed Ymir was living in territory ruled by the 'Warriors' and that Subjects of Ymir were mistreated and looked down upon so I was always aware of the puppeteering happening in the background.

Sophie Anders

It all starts with a lot of questions and a basement key. "Don't worry, be patient," they say, "all questions will eventuallybe answered." You just have to weit until the end of the third smurfing season to get 93% of answers. Now aal those little actions, interactions, choices, and phrases can really start to make sense if you go over your notes... And yes, so many of your theories were correct. Congratulations. The piece that was missing to make it make sense is the presence of a third party, the Marleyans, that makes it nearly impossible for the continental Eldians to let go of the past. They are either brainwashed, or act as if brainwashed out of fear, and thus keep brainwashing the next generations. While we have been on an emotional journey with so many individuals, they are the invisible hand steering the action from behind the screen. And it is the combination of being drip-fed clues of the large world behind the screen, and the gripping individual actions and emotions right in front of us, that makes AoT so good.

Wouter

This episode has one of my favorite scenes in the whole show: We know that there are 3 walls in Paradis island, but in this episode we learn that there is actually a fourth wall were Eldians are turned into titans. Standing on that 4th wall, sergeant Gross looks straight at us (breaking the metaphorical 4th wall) and pretty much asks: -"Why are you so drawn to violence? Why can't you just live at peace?" -"I'm not, you are the only psychopath here" is the usual response. Yet, when he gets pushed off the walls we all celebrate his gruesome death which kind of confirms his point. You mentioned since season 1 how this show plays with your sense of morality and can make you question your principles. It will only get more complex from here on, but, for me, the major lesson from this story is that violence is an inextricable part of human nature and if we don't accept that fact, and learn to find the way around it, we are bound to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. I could only hope that everyone would watch this show and draw a similar conclusion but, as you probably have already seen in the YouTube comments, not every one interprets the message of this story in the same way.

Krul

Finally you get a bunch of answers. And yes, you have been very close to the truth in your theories, so it was very satisfying to watch them being finally confirmed to you. And the thought you made about Dina just before the reveal, golden. 😉 Keep theorizing with the upcoming episodes of S4, as it'll be interesting to see if you'll still be able to read Isayama's mind. 😂

Hezer

Haha no you're good! I should have clocked it in this episode but I genuinely didn't think it was possible for someone to inherit 2. I thought it was rocking the whole 'each person gets their own Titan abilities' haha!!

Sophie Anders

Well now I feel like a fool because you're so right hahaha. Glad you've seen 3x21 xD my bad. A lot to digest in these last 3 episodes

EDC

You don't learn about the Attack Titan until next episode. I was aware of how many Titans we had seen already. I went through them all haha! It was 3 left to be seen UNTIL the Attack Titan was mentioned. We also didn't know that Eren's Titan was a separate entity to the Founding Titan either. We could suspect it but we didn't have it confirmed or knew what such Titan was called hence why I was counting Eren under the Founding Titan until I knew for sure. So there may have been a little confusion but that's because I wasn't sure it was even possible for someone to inherit 2 Titans simultaneously until 3 x 21 :)

Sophie Anders

It looked like a fluffy pyjama top to me 😆

Lustful~Mirage

It's a jumper...

Sophie Anders

We saw six intelligent titans of Marley already. Don’t forget about the ugly one with a backpack 😁

Eleonora Frizorger

Thank you for your reaction! I am so happy to know that you know how right you were all this time!

Eleonora Frizorger

Just to clear up, I dont know if you ut it together in episode 21, but Paradis has the founding titan and Erens titan. Meaning the 7 that marley has are beast, colossal, armour, female and don't forget, ymir. And that leaves two more to be revealed :) and of course, now Paradis has the colossal and technically female, which evens out the playing field nicely. Typed this mid way through, lol. Loving the reaction. So happy we are finally at That Day :D

EDC

The pyjamas are cute ☺️💜 (I at least think they are pyjamas, they look it) 😆 will be watching this episode later or tomorrow 😄

Lustful~Mirage

Can I just be the first to say that getting a rewatch from your perspective has given me so much more appreciation for the show—even though it was already my favorite of all time? You will have cash in 90% of your checks this episode, and that is not an indictment of the show at all—it took a literature PhD, with effort, to unravel the mind of the journey that Isayama himself went through from 19 to 35 when he finished the story. While saying he had everything planned out is not entirely incorrect, it does detract from his own growth, as reflected in the work. Given that context, I believe Attack on Titan has defined an era of story-telling.

Pham Hung

Finally 🤤🤤🤤

Eleonora Frizorger

That day has arrived. 🙌
