Uncut AOT 3 x 15

Comments

Your analysis at the end of this episode is spot on, and that perspective is exactly why I'm looking forward so much to seeing what you think of the series as a whole once you've finished it. My favourite video game series is Mass Effect btw, and after what you were saying about media literacy I'm thinking maybe I should replay it with a focus on the political subtext. Is the Paragon/Renegade morality system an analogy for liberalism vs libertarianism, and what does it say that the games treats them as equally viable? Hmm...

Lex Garrett

People who express anger that politics is involved in anything is not watching any show critically. They may as well be watching colors flash on the screen.

Midnight_Kitty

Thank you for your reaction. I love to listen to you talk about this show and real life parallels Edit: I don’t have favourite game series. But I love Detroit become human and I’m interested in playing some of Fallout games

Eleonora Frizorger

I must've been super busy this week because how did I miss this upload? Edit: Favorite game series is The Legend of Zelda

Violet

favorite game series is probably between the last of us or god of war. Also i love your deep analysis

Alex Mercer

Well if the show spells and pronounces it as Zeke then I'll run with Zeke haha! It's also not unusual to use a Hebrew name considering Levi is not Germanic but Hebrew. Annie also a diminutive form derived from the Hebrew name Hannah. There's actually NOT that many Germanic first names in AOT. Eren is Turkish. Jean is French but also originates from Hebrew. Connie is Latin. Sasha is Slavic / Russia / Ukrainian origin (unisex) name. Marlo is English. Marco is Italian. Kenny is Scottish. Carla is Italian. Hannes is Scandinavian but has Hebrew roots. Grisha is Greek. Miche is Hebrew. Petra is Greek. Isabel is Spanish. Furlan is Slovenian. Ian is Hebrew. Keith is Scottish. Uri is Hebrew. Pyxis is Greek. I believe the only first names that are Germanic from the main characters (so far) are: Reiner Bertholdt Armin Erwin Lesser characters: Dieter Ilse Kitz Frieda Rod There is a lot of Germanic last names in the show but first names not so much. Isayama very heavily drew from Europe in general it seems in regards to names! :)

Sophie Anders

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the name of the human inside the Beast Titan should have been transliterated as Sieg, and not Zeke, as Sieg is the German word for victory (and as we know, Isayama uses many German names in AoT).

DFE

Oh I know 🙈 I just semi felt bad at not having focused on Annie because I spoke so much about Bertholdt and Reiner!

Sophie Anders

Finally got the chance to watch this reaction ^^ I love the symbology and foreshadowing in this show. I do believe the drink is coffee and I think it is symbolic, the fact they focus so much on that. Only those who know what really is happening here are drinking it. People inside the walls don't know coffee, they are not awaken to the reality of the situation that is transpiring. At the same time Berth sees something clearly for the first time, he awakens to the situation, to the fact that he allegedly has no choice. It's sad but beautiful! Loved your comparison to the Belfast pub sentence, and how it compares to what happened in Ireland and happens in so many other places in the real world. In a world where so many people refuse to look back to learn and so many more do not take their eyes from the past, we need people who look both at the past and the future. We need people who want to talk and understand each other (like Armin and Marco, in this show) instead of repeating the mistakes of the past and using them, curse our future. The Bioshock series is amazing, full of politics, of course, wouldn't be a series about dystopic worlds ( ;3 ) if they were not loaded with politcs. I love how the games make you question not just the world around you and what is deemed acceptable or humane to do, but also the reality of your own existence in them. Stories like that are rare in games, Bioshock is a modern story telling masterpiece and it's so nice you "mention, mentioned, will mention" it. One of my faves.

Lemon

Oh, I definitely wasn't trying to imply you didn't already know this. Just relaying what stood out to me in the ep 💙

Anna Kyruin

Well we did see this perspective in Lost Girls so I had already long come to the conclusion that her reaction to Marco was guilt over what she was forced to do. She truly had no choice. It's why I didn't delve into discussing that scene too much in relation to Annie because I'd already gone in depth about it in prior episodes including Reiner's flashback in S2 😊

Sophie Anders

My favorite game series is the souls series, especially Bloodborne, though Monster Hunter is a close second. I was struck while watching your reaction how much focus they put on the pain the whole experience was causing Annie specifically. It clearly was something happening to her, not something she was doing... at least from her perspective. She didn't choose to kill Marco, she didn't have a choice in her mind, but the anguish she shows here, when paired with the dead-eyed stare we see while she apologizes to Marco's corpse later in season one is so heartbreaking and such a stark contrast to how we saw her in the second half of season one. All together it makes me feel like the laughter when she was discovered in S1E23 was relief, assuming it was finally going to end, one way or another.

Anna Kyruin

So I don't discuss it here because I don't come to a new understanding. I'd already understood her feelings towards Marco which was guilt and have discussed that primarily in my Lost Girls Part 1 & 2 React but also parts of S2 where we gained some flash backs into Marco's death. There wasn't a need for me to expand upon it here because I had come to that understanding a good while back :)

Sophie Anders

I haven't had time to watch your discussion yet so you might mention in there but I feel like that after this episode you understand so much more why Annie says sorry to Marcos dead body in season 1

MagnusVD

Yeah the Troubles frames my perspective on a lot of things which is why I was clocking transgenerational trauma from S2 and the weight of history in the recirculation of violence like super early 🙈♥️

Sophie Anders

I'd die without coffee

Sophie Anders

now the fact that the people in hte walls did not know what coffee is explains why they'd have such a hard time

HAL

Haha, also that was a really cool quote about one eye on the past being wise but two being blind! So true and relevant on both societal and individual scales

Russell Gambardella

It was really SO cool and interesting how you compared the conflict in AOT to the troubles, and honestly I have no idea which one is more morally complicated 😭 Super sharp analysis! 💛

Merry

Oh, I look forward 😍 so happy. Op and Ed each officially stated that a particular character was the theme song, and I will comment that infomation later! Thank you. I wonder what you'll say after watching all three seasons.

Eunupp

Hi Frank!!

Sophie Anders

It broke my heart 😭

Sophie Anders

Accurate 😭

Sophie Anders

Right?!

Sophie Anders

Thank you for always being so kind, supportive, and appreciative of my content 😭♥️

Sophie Anders

I should really play Undertale! Yes, media literacy is so important and people just straight up don't care 😭

Sophie Anders

Thank you so much!!

Sophie Anders

I intend to do an analysis of the intros and outros once I've the full context of the show which includes the lyrics ♥️

Sophie Anders

My boy 😭♥️

Sophie Anders

Well I already suspect strongly how it influences the present 😂 and speaking from my own perspective living in a country with divided communities - peace is never straight forward!

Sophie Anders

"It's important to see the past and how it influences the present." Oh, you will soon see how this world's history lives on in the present. It will clear things up, give new understandings, but will it show a way to peace? Or will it only muddy the moralistic waters? Remember, it's AoT...

Wouter

I would also love that reaction to intros and outros with lyrics, but I see it as a bit unlikely to happen.

ML Snow

If you think animation can honestly be reduced to "flashing colors for children" I wonder why you're here? There's nothing fundamentally wrong with choosing to disregard the politics in a work of fiction; but that doesn't mean they're not there.

draeonic 🪼

I understand why they had to kill Marco. I do NOT understand how they could stay successfully undercover for five years then have this conversation in the open, loud enough to be overhead from the other side of the roof. RIP Marco :(

draeonic 🪼

On of my favorite episodes of aot Bert❤️💔

Anastasia Lipgart

I have a question! If you look at all the Aot, do you want to upload op,ed reactions? As a personal wish, the lyrics of op and ed contain the overall contents of aot, so I would like you to react to the full versions. I'm a Korean viewer and I'm watching your reaction well. Your analysis is always amazing. You notice things that I didn't notice when I first saw them. That's amazing. Since I used a translator, the sentence can be awkward!

Eunupp

I agree. I love Bert so much because this episode shows us his true character and makes him my favorite warrior

Pancake

your Vaporeon tattoo is so cute!

Pancake

since i had literature in high school ive known that media literacy is so so important (and my classmates disliked the subject 😭) and i cant even understand how people dont get that stories are political and not just a story😭 anyways my favorite game is Undertale, I don't play many games tbh 😭

vikkkky!

Was planning to wait until you were a little bit further into the season before posting anything, but your outro reminded me of the quote: "The unexamined life is not worth living". So, thanks again for breaking the show for us, examine it carefully and make our lives that much worthy of being experienced. I really can't put into words how much your detailed analyses mean to me, and I truly hope that we can get to enjoy your videos for many more years to come!

Krul

It was very considerate of Isayama to traumatize us in a precise manner - by fully revealing Marco's death and it's significance to the story - as a warmup before completely and utterly traumatizing us! Lmao

Russell Gambardella

On a surface level it might seem like children media is a-political, but trust me, you'd be surprised by what you can find out if you start analysing the themes and messages (usually through the "moral of the story" they have). And you totally have a point about media tiring us out due to the information overload. I myself had to take a break from watching content that is too political many times for the sake of mt mental health. But that doesn't change what i said though. The media you decide to consume instead, that doesn't feel as political, is still political, just probably less depressing and on-the-nose with, making it easier to ignore the political aspects of it (it's important to just turn our brain off every now and then). But by adverting your eyes from something doesn't make it not exist, just means you're not acknowledging it. And finally, there a BIG difference between dismissing the political aspects of media you consume for your mental health, VS actively seeking to undermine media that have messsenges you disagree with, which is what I was talking about in my previous comment. A show like Attack on Tiran is absolutely filled with politics, but if you agree with the message and core themes of the show at least to a certain degree, you can turn your brain off and just see it as a action anime. People will only start calling it "political" when there is something there that REALLY bothers them for one reason or another.

Aki Himura

I completely forgot about the scenes in this episode, it’s great to rewatch

Adam Young

So, I disagree.

Adam Young

Flashing colors for children isn’t political. And also, I don’t think it’s a bad thing to disregard politics in media. I think it’s wise. Political engagement extracts a morale cost. It tires you out. The average human being processes ten times the amount of data our pre-technological ancestors did. It’s wise to avoid the weight of politics on your every moment, and you shouldn’t try to pull people from their happiness. Constant philosophizing and moralizing is bad.

Adam Young

100% when it comes to art "keep politics out of X" is just an immature or cowardly way of saying "I disagree with your politics"

hman70

This whole second part of the season should just be titled EMOTIONAL DAMAGE like that meme.

Hippopi

BERTHEART EP my favorite character in AoT. Very sweet how you didn't see him as quiet or meek like he sees himself but you saw him as reasonable :') This one really highlighted how B&R deal with their trauma differently. Reiner was basically broken and had to split his mind to stay sane while Bert has to find ways to live with himself. He embraces his role as the villain "I decided it" while also having the seemingly contradictory internal monologue "There was nothing we could do". For whatever reason in his mind abandoning his mission and agreeing to share information with the scouts is simply not an option. He accepts that what he is doing is cruel but assigns the ultimate culpability for his actions to the world itself. The song that plays during Bert's speech is called "Apple Seed" and it's maybe my favorite track in the ost. The lyrics are in English if you're interested in listening/looking them up--my interpretation is the song is sung from the perspective of the warriors and Bert in particular. It really adds to the gravity of the scene :')

hman70

People only say "I don't like politics in my media" when the politics in question make them uncomfortable. Every piece of media ever created is political to some extent, is just that the word "politics" became a pejorative, so people only call "political" the stuff they don't like.

Aki Himura

Watching when I get home. The thumbnail is giving your reaction away lol. This show has a lot of ups and downs...and more downs haha. Love your reactions!

Matthew Norris

As soon as I got the notification the first thing I see is Sophies sad face 😞 this whole series has been one emotional rollercoaster after another for Sophie 😆 💜 but you've been really productive and putting out so many quality reaction videos 😊💜
