Hi Cuties,

I might fire out a few polls over the next few weeks.

I'm currently trying to find ways to not only improve visibility on YouTube, but to also make sure that those of you that support my content on Patreon get value for your money but also feel appreciated

My views on YouTube are getting lower, as are my memberships on Patreon, which is quite disheartening as it does feel like a reflection on my content being not up to standard?

Of course - I am not judging anyone that chooses to no longer support my content whether here on Patreon or YouTube. You have the right to spend your time and money wherever you best please. More so I'm just wondering how I can improve the experience for newer Patreon members / newer YouTube viewers

I'm not entirely sure where I could be going wrong other than people may not have a preference for longer analysis, and would rather me keep my videos short with less talking? Or that people want and expect more content on Patreon than what I'm currently doing?

Though it could also be people don't like my style of reacting which is fine because you can't be everyone's cup of tea!

However, if there are ways I could improve on both YouTube and Patreon then I would love to know. Please try and be kind in your phrasing as it can be hard to perceive tone online and I am a bit of a sensitive baby sometimes.

On that note first of the polls:

Also, excuse my yapping, remind yourself that its impossible to please everyone, and more often than not there will be someone who will prefer you doing something in a different way. Moreover, these people tend to be loud and we tend to grab these critiques and take them with us sometimes easier than it should be. Just remember that a LOT of people were enamoured with the way you speak, the way you react and live/experience these shows, from the very beginning, and this is the type of community that I am guessing you want! Don't lose sight of that (:

Lau

Hi!! I just wanted to chime in to tell you that I discovered you because the LM reactions community recommended you, and I immediatly clicked and subbed and now im here :D I adore and admire the way you are experiencing these shows, and it is such a treat to see you being the empathetic person that you are. Sometimes its really hard to question whether the thoughts we're having about something are rational or more biased because of our own fears; but I encourage you to question these destructive thoughts that sometimes appear, specially in this competitive field that is content creation, where someones self-demand trait appears. Questioning the first interpretation that we have about a situation and see if we're jumping the gun and deeming that interpretation as a universal truth. Not to repeat what other people have told you, but your channel is very very new and its SUPER normal to not have a steady viewership, but if I had to give you any advice, it would be to keep being you, giving us something different than most reactors give, which is these incredible INCREDIBLE analysis and nuanced discussions, as well as such a genuine interest and attachment to characters. I think reacting to more mainstream shows that are still up your alley is a good idea to keep drawing attention towards your channel, and I would also keep an eye out for seasonal animes that you might be interested in!! Seasonal hyped animes tend to do very good! Now, I still would advise you to stick to shows youre genuinely interested in because otherwise you might get burnt out easily... I wish you the best of luck and I assure you I, personally, am staying here in this community and Im looking forward to re experiencing anime with you!! theres so many possibilities for the future!! PS. I hope you're doing well at your new job :D

Lau

Thank you so much Kevin and that's why I diversified early! Just in case! :P

I know I’m a late responding to this, but just wanted to offer my perspective as someone who pretty obsessively has watched many anime reaction channels for years. - Your view count is great, both in general and given the time the channel has been going. While it’s easy to compare yourself to the top few mega-channels, of the 40-50 anime channels I keep tabs on, most of them have been running far longer than yours and get maybe 1/5th the views. - I really enjoy your reaction style and hope you don’t change it too much! If you want to play the algorithm game a little bit, I believe the best bang for your buck is having a very short intro before getting into the show. Still have long analyses, but save them more towards the end when possible. - Prepare yourself mentally for the post-AoT viewership slump. It happens to literally every channel and has no bearing on your reaction quality. A few shows just have a very large fanbase that only watch that shows reactions. The long-term successful anime reaction channels are those that weather the downturns after these types of shows, and slowly build up a base of followers with each reaction series that stick around for the long haul. - I have seen over 100 full reaction series to Attack on Titan, and can say conclusively that your reactions are easily in the top 10% in terms of quality across the board. Hope these tips and info help!

Kevin

You are the sweetest Delle - I just have to keep reminding myself that fast growth doesn't mean solid community nor does it mean they are contributing anything new to the react field. I'd rather be a rarity with a smaller audience that genuinely engage with my discussions rather than be forced to fit in. I think it's looking at it in terms of their audience is not so much my audience. Their audience is looking for something fast and quick to consume before they watch the next. My audience appreciate nuance and deep dives and the theory crafting. So whilst they may grow an audience quicker and find more success - it contributes to this idea that all reactors are lazy and don't engage with the show. I like to see myself as being up there with LM Reactions, FilmBuff, and AutoSave. Just got to work on building my niche!

Sophie Anders

seconding the last paragraph! i like your videos because i like *your* way of reacting and analyzing! some of the stuff you watch i've seen before and some of it i haven't, but both are enjoyable because you engage with the shows so differently from how i and many others i've seen do! as an example, i feel like i have a much deeper understanding of some of the themes in Death Note after watching your videos, despite that show being a longtime fav of mine! i'm really excited and looking forward to sticking around for a while to see what your thoughts are on future series; there's so much out there that i think you'll really enjoy and it's a pleasure to have the chance to be on the journey with you! <3

delle

as a person with binging problems the most important thing for me to get through with an anime as fast as possible

R3

I need that Krul - thank you

Sophie Anders

I occasionally start playing one of the Youtube playlists (AoT or DN) before I go to bed, so it can play through it while I'm asleep. Just so youtube algorithm knows that I'm interested in the content, and then promotes the content to others more easily.

Hezer

As other people have mentioned, the first half of AOT season 3 is slower than other parts, so people that is only looking for hype moments will skip them. You are also in a similar situation with DN, so I don't think you should worry if you are experiencing a small dip in viewership at the moment. You should have an increase in views once you get to the second part of AOT season 3 and a larger increase once you put Frieren in YouTube which usually performs better than Death Note. Regarding your content, my only worry at the moment is that you may lose yourself a little bit by trying to appeal to a different crowd. At the end of the day, I think that the people that is joining your Patreon is here because we appreciate a more nuanced type of reaction and analysis. It would be a shame if we were to lose that. So, if you are asking for feedback, my recommendation would be for you to not be afraid of being unapologetically you during your videos and to feel free to express yourself to your hearth content.

Krul

Yeah, I think the lack of "fake-shock factor" hype, and the very genuine deconstruction of scenes, characters, and theory-crafting - makes your reaction style the best I've seen

Dagmar Makara

Oh you could be right. The more people on Patreon the less on YouTube haha! I actually never thought of it that way so you may be correct. I am really glad to hear this insight and that you enjoy what I'm doing. A lot of the comments on YouTube have been along the lines of: "Stop pausing to talk and just give your analysis at the end" - which defeats the purpose because I'll likely have forgotten what I wanted to talk about by the time the episode is over. "Be more expressive with your face" - I AM BRITISH! I am reserved I cannot just fake an expression for views haha!! It's been a little worrying that people think I should just cater my content to what everyone else does in the react circle. Almost as if there's no room for individuality because you're judged for not doing things the way other reactors do especially if you're not a hype reactor.

Sophie Anders

P.P.S - if this is the case, and there's anything us Patreon watchers can do to help with your YouTube Channel views - please let us know! You have a very supportive community here

Dagmar Makara

P.S. Sophe - something that occurred to me a little while ago - since I've been watching your videos on Patreon, I haven't been watching them on YouTube, which I guess lowers your viewer figures. Obviously there's no reason for me to watch the same thing twice on different platforms - but is the increase in Patreon subscribers correlated negatively with lower YouTube views?

Dagmar Makara

I very much enjoy the current setup - the diversity keeps things fresh, and I really enjoy looking forward to the latest rotation of Death Note, Freiren, AoT etc. I think focusing on just 1 show might be a little disincentivising for the people who aren't huge fans of that particular show. Whereas diversity keeps at least some of the audience all of the time. Your reaction channel is the best I've ever seen - and a tonne of it comes from your Doctor of Literature perspective and your willingness to theorycraft in depth, rather than just make shocked faces every few seconds. Your quality is exceptionally good, please remember that

Dagmar Makara

Hannah you're amazing! Thank you! That really gives me a good basis on what to work with!!

Sophie Anders

I don't know what the exact keywords might be but I think writing a description of the episode would be a great way to get some of them in there. So maybe start with the describing the main plot points in the episode, and then also stating the main discussion points in your analysis section. For example, in the AOT episode 3x1, you could do something like: "We’re diving into Attack on Titan Season 3, Episode 1 ("Smoke Signal"), and things are heating up. The Survey Corps is on the run, Levi is more badass than ever, and there's a new sinister plot unfolding. In this reaction, I break down AoT 3x1 through the lens of storytelling, symbolism, and character development. 🔎 What does the power struggle mean for Eren and Historia?
🔥 How does Levi’s past shape his decisions?
📜 What deeper themes are at play in this new arc?" And then wrap it up somehow and add some tags like you already do plus some specific to the episode. Like for this one maybe do #KennyAckerman or Levi. This description isn't very polished and might be too energetic haha but hopefully it gets you an idea of what might be helpful to the algorithm! Hope that helps!

Hannah

I don't want to spoil it for you, but it is well-written and like AoT drops a lot of hints and lines that become important later on. There is a lot you can analyze and ethical dilemmas you can discuss. It is also pretty funny as well, it's made by Ben Stiller.

Man Lit

Thank you everyone for being so lovely in the comments!! This is absolutely not a woe is me post as I am incredibly grateful and honoured to have amassed the support I have in such a short space of time but also the sense of community that we have established too! I am just a very analytical person so if something shifts I instantly want to figure out a reason why or if it's something that can be sorted. It's just how my brain works so I like to hear other people's perspectives. Especially as I am a perfectionist so when there's a shift I tend to blame myself :') I am getting better at that I promise!

Sophie Anders

That's brilliant Hannah - I actually NEVER thought about adding some of the tags in Japanese!! How did that not cross my mind?! What would you recommend for keywords in the descriptions? I have been trying to do that with my more recent videos but my brain is like "I don't know what to write" haha!!

Sophie Anders

I actually think you are doing well based on other reactors I follow. They have a similar view count as you even though they have more subscribers. I think it just takes time to build a following and part of that is building a catalog of content. It’s only been a few months since you started so I would give yourself some more time after you finish a couple shows to see how things progress. One thing you could do at the end of each show (and I think you are already planning to do this) would be a some ranking/review videos to wrap it up. I think those types of things get a lot of views and I certainly enjoy watching them! Also, as someone who works in marketing, keywords and tags are very important. Maybe consider doing some of those tags in Japanese and making your YouTube descriptions a little more packed with keywords!

Hannah

I'll just make this super concise DND style. * -series count = -3 reach, +1 Patreon cancellations. * +series count = +3 reach, -1 Patreon cancellations. * +recent series = +15 reach * +cult series = +8 reach, chance of critical hit (like AOT) * Rules Note: For a series to count it must have a minimum of 1 rolls per standard week unit. Stamina cost per maintained series increases and can result in burnout status.

Anna Kyruin

I do cut as much of the show as I can for YouTube but because I pause and have a lengthy discussion when something occurs - I have to leave the reason for that discussion otherwise it won't make sense hence what seems like dead air often is a conversational starting point. Hype reactors can cut dead air because they never pause to have a conversation or discuss what's happening in the show in detail. I cut what's not necessary but if something is left in then it's because it serves a purpose for a conversational point and won't make sense if removed. If you get me? I don't cut anything for Patreon for obvious reasons haha! But I also don't think with my type of content I am able to be cut down to the same length as a Hype Reactor. It would be possible if I just screamed OMG over every little thing instead of actually focusing on the show and then just going "can't wait to see what happens next" but that honestly makes me feel icky. It's arguably not transformative either because it provides nothing. I can try and cut more but shall see. Will have to experiment with it on Sunday when I edit for the following week and see how that goes! Most of my reactions tends to be in the eyes rather than the face so I think I'm always going to have that issue with people seeing it as dead air whereas I see a reaction. I'm not an overly verbal reactor unless it's something big. I guess I'd rather be in a niche and happy with the work I produce than pushing out the same content that we see time and time again in the reaction field. I guess I just need to learn to be happy with a smaller audience and that I'm unlikely to grow much in comparison. Which is just quite sad really that people don't tend to value genuine engagement with the show. Vinland won't be coming out until AOT is done so it won't be an issue with balance. I only intend to do 2 series at one time so AOT until finished then Vinland. Death Note and then Frieren :)

Sophie Anders

It's unfortunate but youtube audiences do gravitate towards shorter form videos. Longer videos have lower audience retention rates and more people clicking away in the middle of your video will cause the Youtube algorithm to punish you causing your videos to be recommended less. This is probably why most popular reactors seem to follow a formula of cutting the show down to nearly 10 minutes and having less than 5 minutes of post episode discussion. Almost every smaller reactor sees an initial boost of views whenever they start a popular series that inevitably declines since it seems like a majority of that audience don't actually commit to the watching full video series, just singular react worthy moments. (AOT 1x1, 1x5, 2x6 for example). I think most of us here are here on patreon are here for the longer post episode discussion and analysis and would prefer those to stay the same. Personally my only criticism is that I feel like too much of the show is left in the react that creates periods of dead air where you the reactor are not actually doing/reacting/saying anything (which might factor into the issue of viewer retention and why popular reactors cut down the show so short). I'm also surprised on the amount of effort you do for editing the the dialogue to be audible during these parts and I feel like this you could decrease your workload in that area by just muffling or cutting it completely. Hopefully finishing Death Note and adding Frieren to youtube (two completely different audiences) will give a boost in viewership. More shows would increase your audience but reactors are only able to do this when they're full time reacting and can shotgun blast a variety of shows. In terms of schedule with multiple shows I personally think that Frieren would be okay to release once a week since it's a more emotionally focused show without a larger over arching plot. This would help decrease your workload and help you be more stable and consistent with AOT and Vinland afterward.

😂😂😂

Violet

That's completely fair - I definitely don't expect people to watch content that they haven't seen or aren't interested in haha! That would be mad of me to think I am entitled to that time and energy!

Sophie Anders

I'm going to be honest. If a creator is not watching content I have seen already or am interested in I will stop watching them. I typically check back in with creators I genuinely enjoy and subscribe to their channels because I still want to support. All this to say, perhaps those people didn't connect with you like we have or are searching YouTube for a particular show and not truly interested in further content

Violet

I do tend to do the interjections in my intros! I did with 3 x 3! Though it tends to be rare as I try to edit as quickly as I can! Ohh what's Severance about?!

Sophie Anders

Appreciate you a lot Elijah! Thank you!!

Sophie Anders

I am here for AoT reactions, I like deathnote but am not interested in it in the way I am for AoT. I think the views will pick back up for AoT. Season 3 starts very political as you have seen, so most people won't tune in for it. I guess if you want to increase your base you will have to react to more shows that are currently trending or airing. maybe even Live-action stuff? Something that I think you would enjoy is Severance, season 2 is currently airing right now. But yeah your content has been great and I have been enjoying your analysis. Maybe since you watch a bunch ahead of time you could add interjections into the videos about something you noticed while editing? I have seen other reaction channels do that and people seem to enjoy it.

Man Lit

Yeah - it's why I had to put Frieren on hold until Death Note is done because I was overworking myself to the point that I was struggling to have any sense of a life outside of editing and filming! :')

Sophie Anders

I think you should just do what's comfortable for you, but maybe don't start too many reactions if you cannot commit to them on a regular basis because people will lose interest. instead if you could focus on 1 or 2 and have them released in a consistent manner i feel that people will be less likely to unsub. Obviously this is just my opinion but, for me i think consistency is what keeps me subbed to a reactor. I know exactly what day I'm going to get reactions from a certain reactor. People will come and go unfortunately but whats important is that you are also enjoying your content eventually your base will grow, hopefully.

Gina Queen

Personally I am here to see your AOT reacts (AOT is the only anime I've seen), but I do intend to watch your Death Note ones once I've also watched the show for myself! I often tend to wait until multiple AOT episodes have been released as I love to binge watch, so I usually wait until there are around 5 or so episodes before binging them in one go, and then waiting a few weeks for more! Personally I see absolutely nothing to critique in terms of your content, its incredibly enjoyable and I feel like if people do not enjoy the long analysis (which is always reserved for the end of the episode), then they can simply skip it so those who want to see it can watch, and those who don't can click off. I love everything about your videos and analyses, and you have such a sweet personality and open mindset which are amazing qualities in my opinion. I of course can't say a reason as to why you may have less views recently, but I can at least offer my own opinion regarding your lovely content and I fully intend to stick around for the entirety of your AOT journey!

Elijah

You’ve said, once you’ve finished Death Note (on YT), Frieren will follow. And there’s no denying how overwhelming a factor recency bias is, within any medium-based fandom. So I’m sure in time, things’ll pick up. (Not saying recency bias is a bad thing by any means. But there is no denying how much of a role it does have)

Jay Mistry

Smart marketing haha!

Sophie Anders

The only thing I can think of to draw large crowds is to do currently popular shows. Then you take that crowd to other, less popular things once it’s established
