What to watch after AOT?!

Hi Darlings!

I have 2 Anime's that I really want to watch after AOT. I was intending to watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and then Vinland Saga.

But I recently found out that the writer of Vinland Saga is extremely good friends with Isayama and that they have long, philosophical conversations with one another.

So I am tempted to switch the order and do Vinland Saga first as it might be interesting to see how themes transcend between the two series etc!

I won't be doing a poll for what to watch after Death Note as it's Frieren haha! Though after Frieren I am torn between Monster and Steins;Gate so likely will be a poll later on!

But I'll let you all decide:

Comments

Vinland is a 9/10 for me, but FMAB is a 10/10. I could be happy either way. But for specifics, I definitely prefer FMAB in English, and Vinland in Japanese.

Adam Young

I have no issue with a slow burn so long as it's done well. AOT is somewhat of a slow burn too if you think about it as we only really get to the meat of the story in S3!

Sophie Anders

Tough one. I'd go with FMA:B, I absolutely love it. To be honest I love both, Vinland Saga is an excellent story but it's a very slow burn story - if you're into that, that's fine, but just be aware.

Dagmar Makara

That is a fairly accurate description

Keller

You've got the right idea. Vinland saga is absolutely incredible. I have it ranked in my top 5 with AoT and Monster. And after Frieren, Monster is the best choice. You've got a great selection of deep stories here lol.

Keller

I had originally written a more detailed description of VS central theme but ended up deleting it!

Ragdefender2

Well, it has been suggested more than once that tissue companies should sponsor reactors watching "Violet Evergarden", lol

Krul

So what're you saying is I need to bring a lot of tissues?

Sophie Anders

LET'S GO KRUL! We can watch together!

Sophie Anders

I wouldn't consider that a spoiler as it's just more the vibe of what the show is going to be about rather than "THESE ARE THE EXACT THEMES THAT VINLAND SAGA FOLLOWS!" So you're good haha!

Sophie Anders

Lol ok this might be slightly spoiler if just knowing the theme of the show is going to be considered a spoiler by you. But the themes of VS and AOT are like each other’s anti thesis. I can totally see why its better to watch VS right after AOT.

Ragdefender2

Can't wait for you to watch "Violet Evergarden". My hot take here is that in terms of enjoyment and emotional impact, I rate "Violet" even above "Frieren". I know it is an unpopular opinion, but that is just how much I love that show.

Krul

Was gonna write a new comment, but Hanna has pretty much already expressed my feelings about this poll. FMAB was my favorite anime until season 4 AOT came out and it is an absolutely fantastic story. It is not quite as complex as AOT, but it is much more personal and emotional. I really think you will love it. For Vinland Saga, I understand why people like it, but it really doesn't resonate with me. Having said that, I'm sure you'll find some interesting new perspectives and insights, specially because of its historical context, so I'll be happy to do my first rewatch with you.

Krul

VInland Saga FTW

Matthew Norris

Absolutely fair perspectives!! Yeah I am intrigued by FMAB a lot!! It'll definitely be a watch either before or after Vinland!

Sophie Anders

I've seen FMAB and it is a brilliant series, sadly when I first saw it I was kind of pushed into it by a roommate and it colored my view of the series so I don't really have the kind of nostalgia for it I think it deserves from an intellectual point of view. It's a standout series for sure. Vinland Saga is a bit rough for me because I haven't finished it and won't get into why, let's just say I started not liking the feelings it was giving me, but at the same time I recognize it is a masterpiece. Maybe if that one wins I'll watch it apace with you and the fam on the discord can help keep me engaged lol. There are no bad picks here, I only voted FMAB because I've finished it.

Anna Kyruin

Aw Hannah you big cutie!! Yeah I am so excited for FMA. I've been banned from watching TV with my partner as he's currently re-watching it so I have to warn him when I'm coming into the bedroom or the living room haha!!

Sophie Anders

Fullmetal Alchemist is my second favorite anime after Attack on Titan, so I’m excited for that one when it comes! The storytelling in FMA is great as well. I also watched Vinland Saga—while I can see why so many people love its storytelling, it didn’t quite click for me. That said, I'm sure that watching it with you will give me a fresh perspective! I can’t wait to see your future analyses and discussions—they’re always so insightful and engaging!

Hannah

I was about to say haha!! Steins;Gate will definitely be coming in 2025!

Sophie Anders

Yeah! I remember someone said I think on YouTube that Vinland Saga isn't done but that the stories seem self-contained within the season? Not sure how accurate that is but yeah haha!

Sophie Anders

Both are great. You should definitely watch in succession. Just a heads up: Vinland Saga's manga is still ongoing, so you wont be able watch the whole story. FMA has been complete for many years now. Mentioning all of this so you can consider which one to watch first (even tho I voted Vinland Saga lol)

krizalid117

Oh I missed that last comment! Yessss bring on the future poll.

Driahva

I'm voting Brotherhood, but I'm still suggesting Steins;Gate. c:

Driahva

Absolutely! It becomes a matter of only watching what brings in viewers and attention, and whilst I won't lie that I would love to be a successful reactor - I also don't want to be forced into only watching what other people want to see. My interest is the stories themselves. If what I watch doesn't interest me then filming will become a chore! The only reason filming is so enjoyable is because I love AOT and Death Note! My neurodivergent brain has to like something or it will be so obvious in my reactions that I'm not having a good time! :')

Sophie Anders

That's great to hear and sounds like a very fair way of doing things keeping your interests in their. I think a lot of channels can end up only catering to viewers and they become a bit cookie cutter only watching the same shows as each other in the same order

Zwei

This is why I'm not going to be doing popularity votes by asking people to determine what I watch next and give a whole list of shows to choose from. I see a lot of Reactors do this and they overlook really good series as a result because it's a popularity contest and the bigger series with the bigger fanbase will always win. My interest is less in what's popular and more in terms of what's good writing! I'd rather watch something niche and it be amazing than something popular and it just isn't for me! Rather - I'm going to pick 2 shows that I want to watch and then put them up to a vote solely to determine which one I watch first and which one I watch second. I do have a list of anime recommendations so I do pull from that. Violet Evergarden is on that WANT TO WATCH list so you may see it within the next year! I know this will probably lead to my YT channel being all over the place in terms of views due to not just siding with the popular choices or what's mainstream, and my growth may be slow. But I also don't want to be forced by a poll to watch something that I don't really have an interest in. So polls will be kept very small but ultimately will be the 2 shows that I want to watch most haha! There may be times where there is no poll at all like there was none with Frieren because there was no way I wasn't watching it haha!

Sophie Anders

To not spoil anything, I'll just say that you might find Vinland Saga very interesting, and it might light up some unrelated/loosely related ramblings for you due to your knowledge. Which I would be very interested to see.

Hezer

It's a bit away from mainstream shonen (which will dominate popularity votes) but I'd love to see your take on Violet Evergarden at some point. It's a short series so wouldn't take too much commitment

Zwei

Vinland saga is peak writing. 😌
