As always - no hand holding. If the show brings it up then trust the show to correct me in future. The joy comes from watching me figure things out, not by telling me. No heavy hinting. No pointing stuff out. No re-directing me to phrases.
You all know by now how analytical I can be so hinting will cause me to hyperfocus on it and that's going to ruin the show for not only me but you too because it takes away the natural learning experience.
You were first time watchers once and likely did not pick up this information straight away so keep that in mind and enjoy! โค๏ธ

I somehow hadn't twigged that it could be a red oni/blue oni reference, but now that you mention it that makes total sense.

They were nothing but pawns in your worthless game! Well.. you lose * Levi goes to slash at Erwin * Erwin then catches Levi's blade Erwin : Worthless game? Whos the one that killed my subordinates, and your friends? Was it me? Was it you? Do you think that if you had come to attack me together that the two of them would have made it out alive? * Levi thinks to himself : If we hadn't split up.. Levi : ...That's right.. It was my conceit. My damned pride is to blame- * Erwin interrupts: No! It was the TITANS! Where did the titans come from? Why do they exist? Why do they eat people? We don't know! We're completely ignorant. And as long as we stay ignorant, they'll keep eating us. We'll never turn the tables on them by staying inside the walls. Look around you! In this wide open place, there are no walls no matter how far you go. Here, there might be something to free us from despair. But there are people who would keep us from leaving the walls. They stay where danger can't reach them, obsessively thinking of their own profits and losses. It's understandable. The clouded eyes of mankind blocked for a hundred years by the wall. They cannot see the other side. What about you, Levi? Have your eyes remained clouded? Will you kill me and return to the dark underground? We won't give up on going outside the walls... Fight with the survey corps Levi!! Humanity needs your skill!! Also, I assume many of the Scouts you saw have already passed. Petra and the rest of Levi's squad likely joined after Levi.

Or was it you? [โฆ] Itโs the titans! Where did they come from? Why do they exist? Why do they kill humans? I donโt have the answers. None of us do. Limited by our ignorance, weโll continue to be devoured by the titans! If we just stay shut behind the walls, we are never going to escape this nightmare. Take a good look around you! No matter how far you go, there arenโt any walls here. In this open space, I believe there is something there, illuminating our despair . But there are those who seek to prevent us from venturing beyond the walls. They are consumed by selfish thoughts of their own losses and gains from behind the walls where they are safe! Itโs only natural. During the past 100 years, hindered by the walls, the eyes of humanity have been clouded. They cannot see the landscape that lies on the other side. But what about you, Levi? Will you let your eyes remain clouded? Will you kill me and return to the darkness of the underground? We will not give up our journey outside the walls. Humanity needs your strength! So fight for the Survey Corps, Levi! Iโm not making a deal with you this time.โ Not sure why they decided to change it in the OVA, but I like this version much better.

2025-01-07 21:15:06 +0000 UTCFor sure, a perfect example of this is how you immediately saw what Erwin's action of going down to Levi's level in the puddle really meant. Like you, I saw the symbolism of this and I see many other reactors not catch these things. But I need to say that I don't think its their fault, as humans we have preference towards the abstract or concrete, its a part of what defines our personality at least in terms of Carl Jung's cognitive function theory. So it makes sense why some people prefer to view things at face value while others like to explore the deeper abstract side of things. Frankly, the world needs both.

2025-01-07 19:52:00 +0000 UTCI know, I was making a joke but you'd be surprised at how many people miss symbolism or refuse to look deeper into it as having a meaning beyond. Trust me - I've seen my fair share and heard very many comments of "well the curtains are just blue" You don't see it that way because you are reading deeper into it but there are people that won't put two and two together because they're taking everything at face value rather than looking at the deeper meaning :P

2025-01-07 19:20:43 +0000 UTCAbsolutely but that's also a psychological process to that where even when one's environment changes and they do have access - they continue to go through that routine and behaviour because it's ingrained into them. Both a survival instinct but also a way of control and almost comfort. I'm not saying it's irrational but more it's tied to his character development giving an insight into his background and in such a disempowering world, cleaning can be his way of finding control As someone with OCD tendencies [not cleaning haha but more the obsessive compulsive aspect] a lot of Levi's behaviours make sense to me.

Levi would probably have felt less guilty had he decided to stay with them, but he also did what Eren did and trusted his comrades ๐ฅบ Whose to say he would have been able to save them had he been there (though it's more liekly). Then he would've been left with the guilt of not being strong enough (like Eren with his mom).

2025-01-07 16:39:47 +0000 UTCI honestly don't get how anyone could skip these. They provide so much depth to Levi's character. The experiences he's gone through. What he's suffered. I knew Furlan and Izzy were not making it out of the OVA because we hadn't seen them in the Series but god their deaths were so horribly brutal. All they wanted was a chance to be free and to live without being mistreated or abused and their one moment of pure freedom led to their deaths. It's just so heart wrenching. Also catching the way that Levi is passing down the wisdom to Eren that Erwin gave to him, about doubt being a killer and having to make the choice that you can live with because you cannot predict the outcome of your actions was just so beautiful.

2025-01-07 15:54:22 +0000 UTCUgh Furlan and Izzy are such great characters! Levi always surrounds himself with the best friends :') This OVA was everything to me as a Levi fan. I came to the same conclusion, that Levi's cleanliness comes from a compulsion to control some aspect of his life (ntm it keeps you healthy down in those slums). The way they treat the citizens of the underground like wild mice. Unwanted, filthy, and undeserving of life. I couldn't help being a little resentful towards Erwin because no one acknowledged the fact that these children/young adults were being coerced/exploited and that the govt was sh*t. But Erwin's determination and charisma quickly wins you over lol Ntm he's also a pawn in the govt's game, trying to figure out what's truth and what's farce. Anyone who misses these OVA's truly misses out on a loreful treat (I know that's not a word :P)

Besides, Erwin's intuition was right, he literally found the strongest soldier in history in that subway city, a great spearhead for the legion.
