Uncut AOT OVA Ilse's Notebook

Comments

You’d be correct. Every season contains information and reveals that completely flip the story on its head. It’s crazy

Dot

Yeah - it's really interesting how we can all see different actions in the Titan's behaviour. Either trying to control that Titan aspect of themselves OR it being frustrated at not being able to communicate and answer the questions that Ilse is demanding. It's what makes this show so great is that we are able to suspect things for ourselves! :D

GOTTA GO FAST

Sophie Anders

I'm so excited to see what happens!!

Sophie Anders

I think I'm going to react to all the openings together so probably going to wait until I've finished the series!!

Sophie Anders

I have a feeling that every season is going to make me question everything I thought I knew haha!!

As another commenter stated, keep in mind a lot of the details from this OVA as you watch Season 2. The name Ymir, “Subjects of Ymir”, and even the appearance of the Titan itself. You’re gonna be mind blown lol

Dot

I was confused for the longest time about why the titan backed up and called her Ymir, even after watching the series 10+ times lol

ChikoCharm

the most amazing part is how fast ilse can write

When I first saw this - I was reminded of a King/Queen or Emporer/Empress with the wording of "subjects"

Dagmar Makara

And I saw that as the titan understanding Ilse's questions, but being unable to produce an answer, which tore it apart mentally. And when Ilse tries to run away, the titan flips to "no, don't go", which created a disconnect with the "rational" mind controlling the actions, and then the instincts kick in.

In norse mythology, Ymir (pronounced "yuh-meer") is the first being brought into existence and the progenitor of all the Jötnar, also known as the Frost Giants. (By the way, "Titan" is a translation of "kyojin", but the literal translation of this japanese term is just "big person". So it seems that the connection with the Jötnar was lost in the retranslation.) After Ymir died, their body gave rise to the World Tree (Yggdrasil), which explains why the Titan put Ilse's body inside a tree. I mentioned before, but I find the symbology in Ilse's notebook absolutely fascinating. It really opens up the story that we have seen so far, specially now that we know that there is content in the Wallist's religion. Finally, as you mentioned in your discussion, the reason why Hange always starts her experiments by trying to communicate with the titans is because she has read Ilse's notebook and is trying to replicate those results. So what just seemed like some crazy quirk of her now makes perfect sense once we have the relevant context.

I also saw it as the Titan trying to control their instincts. So, when Ilse started running they were just completely unable to control their Titan instincts anymore

Krul

It's interesting how different our initial impressions are (in fact that's one of my favorite things about watching reactions) You interpreted the Titan tearing off it's face as a sort of toddler like frustration with it's lack of communication. I remember back when I first saw this I had interpreted it more like self harm being used to distract itself. It very clearly felt compelled to devour Ilse at first and so I read it as it tearing away it's flesh to help it resist giving into that urge. The Titan then lunges at Ilse only when she starts to run which reminds me of my dog and how she can be just fine around a toy, but if that toy moves she's F'in IN. LOL :D

To add to the above: EN VA's range from "Imeer" to "Yimeer" generally.

Yippeeee

All I'll say. Try to remember details of this OVA for the future. There's plenty of omg moments available in next episodes/seasons if you do. Lots of flavor for your theory soup. Ymir name has a Norse pronunciation. The Japanese voice actors use pronunciation that is derived from that into japanese, that's "Yumiru". But here's where my English knowledge is struggling, as I can't give good example with other words how to pronounce this one. Maybe "Emir" would be easier for English people. Based on google translate's text-to-speech, it says it almost correct if you listen how it pronounces "Ymir" when the selected language is English. And the best pronunciation would be, if you switch google translate to Norwegian and listen to that.

Good job on completing the first season! Will you be reacting to the openings now or no?

ProudWararar

You have to ask yourself why did the titan confuse Ilsa with “Lady Ymir”(ee-meer like meerkat). Then you have to ask why did that same titan fixate on hange? I cant wait for you to clear s2
