I think when Nile spoke to Erwin and said that he was committing treason, it was more so that he was acting without the consent of the Monarchy and other branches of the military. Only the Survey Corps knew of this plan, so the military police, the higher-ups, and (most importantly) the innocent people of Stohess were not aware that their peaceful little town was about to become a battlefield for titans. A lot of innocent people will die (again) unknowingly due to Erwin's desire to pursue the truth and uncover the mystery of the Titans. I think Nile called those acts treasonous, and arguably, there are. Personally, I am an Erwin and Eren apologist soooooooooooo they can do no wrong in my book, lol

though while often shown as more feminine its ... likely that hteir name is a modified, japanized and more gender neutral version of hans

HAL

hanji does seem to be... nonbinary but a bit more leaning towards female unlike for example crona from soul eater who is... basically completely genderless in japanese you can't tell from just hte pronouns being used but you can tell from the authors statements or from hints from how characters act around them or if it actually becoems a theme in the story so yeah there's definitely a bunch of nonbinary anime charactes even though language alone isn't technically 100% clear

HAL

people tend to thinkn its weird how easily jean could disguise himself as eren but most of those people have never seen eren and this is a time before photography they probably only know what erne looks like from a brief handwritten description/handcopied file

HAL

I can't wait to giggle to myself about how wrong/right you are.

Yeah Japanese culture is really frustrating when it comes to minority identities. Don't get me started on "Traps".

I don't usually participate in this, but this is such a small community, that it's an actual rarity to find another Finn. Torille! Just a bit of Finnish internet culture here. I won't explain the whole thing, but when we encounter another Finnish person or Finland is mentioned somewhere in the internet, we call "Torille". There's the whole background available in Urban Dictionary for anyone interested in that tidbit.

Hezer

yayy another finnish person here! Torille!

Nina

Yes, I wasn't disagreeing. Just wanted to clarify that gender neutral pronouns doesn't imply non-binary similarly to English. And the gender can be easily mistaken from other context or traits (name, personality, etc), if not specified or instructed. And that's why it's not conveyed through translation. I don't think Isayama was too much involved or instructing with the translations. It could have also been due to outside pressure that decided Hange to be made more specifically female in the Anime production. Non-binary culture is still kind of an "underground" culture in Japan, and it's heavily looked down on from outside parties.

Hezer

I'm aware, and it's one reason that explicitly non binary characters are often missed by translators and given gendered pronouns in the translated text. Not that I think you were disagreeing but wanted to clarify I was saying that Isayama was explicit that they (Zoe) were non binary.

Anna Kyruin

Just a thing about Japanese, the language itself is gender neutral in general. There are gender specific pronouns, but they're not as often used as in English. Many times people are referred to with just names. That's why it's difficult to determine gender if not specifically said so. Same with my native language Finnish, it's completely gender neutral. There is only one pronoun for all genders, and unless you specify it explicitly, it's impossible to know the gender of a subject. (which is why many Finnish people speaking English mix up when using he/she/they/etc, our brains are not trained to differentiate that).

Hezer

Yeah - I think it's obvious that Eren admires her. He uses the technique she used on him against Jean in Ep 4 (just watched it) and she's watching him with a look of admiration. Definitely wish there was more of a fleshed out dynamic between them but I think it's clear enough that he felt a deep sense of denial that Annie could do this to him!

Sophie Anders

Oh one other thing I wanted to add. Hange Zoe is life. The way they were behaving when the female titan was approaching their trap was an absolute mood. As is poor Moblit their subordinate having to put up with their shenanigans constantly. I hope Moblit has a good meditation regime to destress. Also according to the mangaka Hange is canonically non binary using only gender neutral pronouns and that was absolutely intentional. The anime artists took a bit of artistic freedom to make Hange more feminine. All hail our non binary Quing! (Kueen?)

Anna Kyruin

I wanted to clarify something I posted on the last episode because the theme is even stronger in this episode. My understanding is it's implied in the manga that Eren's bond with Annie specifically was stronger than that with any of the other trainees besides his childhood friends. That the two of them spent lots of time training together that wasn't included in the anime because of time constraints. To the point that Mikasa in this episode even implies he might have been in love with her. I do think he would have been furious if any of the other trainees betrayed them, I don't think he would have fallen into delusional denial about it the way he does in this ep. (Caveat that this is only something I've heard from manga readers, and I haven't read them myself)

Anna Kyruin

More I want to take a guess rather than whether I can accurately predict :P

Sophie Anders

Oh, getting a bit arrogant there, thinking that you could predict what season a character is going to die in, when you don't even know where this series will take you. ๐Ÿคฃ I'd be impressed if you could just predict what focus the next season will have. Looking forward for your E25 outro. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hezer

Oh heck yes let's go
