to be fair, it´s not uncommon to adress an Female Officer of Higher Rank with "Sir" - as an individuel is not adressed directly, but only the Rank.

And yes, you guessed it right, Erwin question will be extremely relevant throughout the show. By the way, you probably already know this, but there are 2 important OVAs that you should watch after you finish season 1: "No regrets" which centers on Levi while he was still living in the underground and "Ilse's notebook" which is mostly centered around Hange. Would love to watch your reactions to those when the time comes!

Kodansha said, "Isayama has confirmed that… we’re not allowed to confirm Hange’s gender. He has instructed us to avoid gendered pronouns when referring to Hange, or at least to use he AND she with equal frequency."
