I really feel for those of you in America. Religion should never dictate the rights that people have access too, especially when the system serves to benefit those who believe whilst condemning and discriminating against those who don't. I live in Ireland and we had that for a VERY long time too. Thankfully getting a lot better though!

2024-11-18 11:43:32 +0000 UTCI sure wish there was separation of church and state in the US... I'm not religious and yet my life is being dictated by American Christian Nationalism...

2024-11-18 07:18:15 +0000 UTCI don't think I've ever seen anyone analyze individual random titans behaviour to this depth

2024-11-17 09:55:13 +0000 UTCthey have some degree of like late medieval early renaissance science but then they do actually live in a world with things that would be evne beyond our understanding if they suddenly showed up here

2024-11-17 09:54:30 +0000 UTCI'm not sure its just revenge, eren clearly wanted to go outside before his mother got eaten, that just added a LOT of extra motivation

2024-11-17 09:51:53 +0000 UTCthe initial premise kindof strikes a pretty clever combination of being simulatneously somehwat unique and creative but also includign enough tropes and allowing for enough assumptions that it leaves enough room to change and twist things but lets people have enough assumptions to make those twists surprising I won't spoil anyhting specific but I think its safe to say that eren fake dying and returning as a titan is not going ot be the last surprise in this series, it would be kinda disappointing if it was
HAL
2024-11-17 09:45:33 +0000 UTCthere's kindof a separate clas system between the military and general society though and in the miltiary people actually start out the same and can advance based on how good they are and what they do its not an entirely fair or perfect system especially since you basically have to sign your life away to join it but compared to a medieval class system with noble families you either get born itno or not it is relatively speaking fairer which of course draws additional people to join the military while ensuring that the strongest ones benefit form the existing system while getting taksed with upholding it

2024-11-17 09:35:23 +0000 UTCYeah - what is happening in America is very scary especially considering the country was founded on separating church and state and was one of the core ethos of their democracy. Now it's verging on extreme Christian fascism.
Sophie Anders
2024-11-15 11:58:39 +0000 UTCI wholeheartedly agree with you about the separation of state and church, and have had those same thoughts about America of late myself. . . I am so thankful I live in NZ so we have no such problems here... yet.

2024-11-15 07:30:16 +0000 UTCHange's excitement at anything Titan-related and their fascination with Eren are the best.

2024-11-14 20:03:52 +0000 UTCRegarding post-lockdown hobbies: I work with a business selling Gundam model kits in UK conventions and such. During lockdown the number of new customers who were suddenly addicted to model kits was phenomenal. Suddenly: no MCM London but we're getting MCM-levels of online customers. Wild time lockdown was. Own hobbies involved briefly streaming, but I have fled from that for now.

2024-11-14 18:39:09 +0000 UTCAbsolutely! Back in ancient times, it was natural for people to attribute anything they couldn’t explain to the work of God/religion. Even something as everyday as rain was thought to be a gift from above. If we’d had walls that protected us back in our ancient times, we’d probably have believed they were God’s gift too

2024-11-08 03:54:38 +0000 UTCFor sure but I also think it speaks to the insecurity of the world they inhabit too. People grasp for deeper meaning when they feel helpless against a larger threat and that sometimes takes the form of religion!

2024-11-07 11:13:37 +0000 UTC"UM YEAH! This was all part of the plan boys - I promise!"
Sophie Anders
2024-11-07 11:12:54 +0000 UTCExactly!! It felt so out of character for him to just TURN that way and very clearly something deeper was going on. Levi had to prove that Eren wasn't a threat and the way to do that was to show that he wasn't going to lash out as a titan when hurt or beaten or spoken down to by a superior officer. Without the context of his earlier scenes, we would have gone "fuck he's horrible" but those earlier glimpses are so crucial to understanding what is actually happening!
Sophie Anders
2024-11-07 11:12:36 +0000 UTCYup, you gotta remember, AoT is almost like medieval times in a way.. that's why religion holds much more power.

2024-11-07 04:45:37 +0000 UTCI just imagined a version of the show where Levi really is just a giant jerk and simply felt like beating the crap out of Eren for no reason, and then Erwin has to scramble in the moment to come up with a "plan" that makes it seem like Levi is not just a total psychopath. This continues for four seasons and drives the entire narrative forward.

2024-11-07 03:25:11 +0000 UTCI’m glad you picked up almost immediately on Levi’s actual reason for beating the tar out of Eren - it proved as you said that Eren’s not going to just turn when he’s angry or hurt, showcased the stupidity of thinking trying to dissect him is less dangerous that kicking him, and viscerally showed that he, Levi, doesn’t give a fig about danger and doesn’t need to. Characterization is so consistent in this show that I really think that’s why our first two interactions with Levi are him teasing Hanji and him comforting his dying soldier - they showed who he is when no one’s looking, as it were, so the audience now has a good chance to realize his real motivations here.

2024-11-07 02:07:10 +0000 UTCThe intersection of religion and politics is a tale as old as human history, and that added component really propels the story in this episode. You are catching on to soooooooooooo much important context (I won't say what I'm referencing, lol). I love how they explain in this ep that the "Wallist" religious group has been gaining power over the last five years, when the collasal first broke the wall. For the last 100 years, human have enjoyed relative safety within the walls and never had to think about the harsh environment outside their barrier (except for the Survey Corps, which is why everyone thinks joining them is insane). And then one day, their sense of security is shattered. People will look for answers in those situations, and divine reasoning will always be a "go-to" option to explain what people think is unexplainable. I bet before the walls initially fell, people thought these "Wallists" were a bunch of religious nutjobs preaching about an apocalypse that will never come. Fast-forward to now and the church pews are probably filled with people looking for a place to feel safe again. Searching for answers is part of the human genome. Great reaction, as always!!

2024-11-06 23:59:53 +0000 UTCAw I love that! Such a great way to combine your heritage and upbringing. Your parents really put a lot of love and thought into your name. That's amazing. I'm so glad you love the reactions!! I can't wait to see the show in its entirety so I can sit down and do a proper analysis!

2024-11-06 16:38:51 +0000 UTCThats right, my parents chose a name that would be Persian and Irish haha. We say Dara in Persian where the a is pronounced like a in awe. By the way I really love your reactions, I am so excited to see your reaction as the show progresses its really a gem of literature that leaves an impact on the viewer forever. It has actually changed my worldview and opened up my eyes a lot as I started watching it when I was pretty young.

2024-11-06 16:36:51 +0000 UTCAY!! So you absolutely know where I stand on the whole religion and politics should be separate! I was wondering when I saw the name Daragh but I never want to presume where people are from but definitely screamed Irish to me!
Sophie Anders
2024-11-06 16:13:35 +0000 UTCIm actually in Ireland too, my parents came here before I was born. Unfortunately I know about how it was here too as I went to a catholic school (for whatever reason).

2024-11-06 16:11:54 +0000 UTCI'm in Ireland so I completely sympathise! The way the women in my dad's family were punished for simply existing due to Catholicism was horrendous. Thankfully things are improving here but it's still not completely detached. Sending you much love and hugs!
Sophie Anders
2024-11-06 16:01:44 +0000 UTCYou are very right that politics and religion should not coexist. I am from Iran where politics is supportive of religion and its all a big Sh show.
