One thing that is very apparent with the movies is that they were restructured to capture the SOUL of Evangelion. A lot of the tiny nuances and psychological angst from the original show really was totally overboard for the actual lessons. For people who have good literacy skills, all of the viscerally disgusting shit the characters go through makes the lessons hit harder, but a lot of people look way too deep into it. Same thing with a lot of the mystery, worldbuilding, theorycraft. People get lost in it and nerd out and forget the actual main lesson of the franchise. Asuka and Rei's love are actually not all that different, the thing that put Rei onto Shinji was how he went out of his way to make her feel welcome and pleasant, making her lunch. She said thank you, developing individuality and attachment for the first time, Asuka really likes shinji for the same reason. Mari is also MEANT to make you feel this way, she is a whole metacommentary beast of her own.
