The Clone Wars has begun: This whole era is one of my favourites in all of Star Wars, thanks to Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series (2008 - 2021). Set between Episodes II and III, the series not only highlighted the Clone Wars conflict but also deeply developed Obi-Wan and Anakin, along with side characters and even background characters from the films who didn’t get much attention. The Clone Wars itself isn’t a major focus in the films, since they’re primarily about Anakin Skywalker. Naturally, the movies skip over much of the conflict, which is why George Lucas created The Clone Wars series, to fill in the three-year gap and explore the war in greater depth. It’s also the conflict Luke mentioned back in A New Hope (1977), when he said to Obi-Wan, “You fought in the Clone Wars.” That single line sparked decades of curiosity, long before we knew what the Clone Wars actually were. When the Expanded Universe of novels took off in the 1990s, some writers touched on the Clone Wars, usually in vague terms. George Lucas had instructed authors to avoid going into too much detail, since he planned to explore the war himself in the prequels. One fan theory about the Clone Wars, popular before Attack of the Clones (2002), was that a dark Jedi created clones of Jedi, triggering a war between the Jedi and their 'evil' counterparts. --------------------------------------------------------- Clone Troopers: It’s worth noting that Clone Troopers are not the same as Stormtroopers, although there are intentional similarities between them, mostly their white armor. Clone Troopers were genetically engineered clones of Jango Fett, designed to age at a normal human rate but with accelerated growth to reach maturity faster. At the start of the Clone Wars, the clones were 10 years old (biologically 20). By the time of the original trilogy, which takes place 22 years after Episode II, most clone troopers would be around 32 years old (biologically 64). They are only about 12 years older than Luke and Leia chronologically, but due to their accelerated aging, they are much older biologically. Stormtroopers, on the other hand, were regular humans who were either enlisted or conscripted into the Imperial military. The concept was similar, a military force clad in white armor. But unlike the clone troopers, the Empire relied on actual people, mostly humans, rather than genetically grown soldiers. Clone Troopers - Republic Troopers (Clones) Stormtroopers - Imperial Troopers (Enlisted Humans) -------------------------------------------------------- The Confederacy of Independent Systems: The CIS (Confederacy of Independent Systems), also called the Separatists, are a group of star systems and powerful corporations that desire to break away from the Galactic Republic. The corporations included the Trade Federation (which used B1 battle droids), the Techno Union, the Banking Clan, the Corporate Alliance, and the Commerce Guild, to name a few. The CIS was led by former Jedi Count Dooku, who (unknown to the Separatists themselves) secretly served Darth Sidious, the hooded figure who frequently appears in this film and was first seen in The Phantom Menace. They’re not the “bad guys,” but rather people who wanted to gain independence from the Republic, which they saw as failing them. Although the movies don’t really focus on this aspect, The Clone Wars series explores it much more deeply, painting the conflict in shades of gray by showing both the Republic’s and the Separatists’ perspectives. Once again, Lucas expanding and developing the ideas he introduced in the films.
