Designer interviews #4: Sean McCoy (Mothership)

TOMORROW, I'll release a 45 minute review of sci-fi TTRPG Mothership on Quinns Quest.

TODAY, you dear patrons may feast on this giant interview Mothership's lead Sean McCoy.

But honestly, I could have spoken to Sean for twice as long. As you'll be able to learn tomorrow, Mothership does so much that's interesting, and the campaign of it I'm playing has been some of the most fun I've ever had behind a GM screen. I hope this chat whets your appetite!

Designer interviews #4: Sean McCoy (Mothership)

I'm so glad I came back to listen to this again, this is maybe one of the best of the Quinns Quest reviews.

Peter Robinson

This was a great interview. You can tell he lives and breathes game design and really cares about the ttrpg scene

Skanah

Wow, I'm bummed that the dev team removed the rest RP mechanic that seems like a really great idea, I would totally homebrew that into my game it seems like a perfect way to introduce a quieter characterful moment and honestly fits with the genre quite well, I feel like we see scenes like that in horror fiction

Stephen Mariano Cabrera

Great game. yeah I can see that criticism about tech levels being all over and confusing, I wish it wasn't that way. Still fun.

Christopher derhodes

I remember reading it in college (not for college) and I really liked the first two books, but couldn't get into the third book. Not entirely sure why, maybe bc it's so very different

Brickshitter

Any tips on bridging the gap between a PC dying and the player taking over a new one? I.e. why are they there? Why do we care about them?

Gabe Cassala

I read it a while ago now, and even as someone who reads a lot I had trouble to get into Gormenghast. I liked what I was reading but I found difficult to really enjoy my reading as it takes time for the mood of the book to grasp you. Once you're there though (if I remember right it took me a good third of the book), it's a pleasure to follow the characters and the events as they evolve. The two following books are much easier to get into, even if the third is pretty different from the other two

I watched the Youtube video, and it was amazing and fantastic! This whole Patreon is terrible for my wallet and my wall of shame (TTRPGs I own and have never played), but I wouldn't have it any other way. You mentioned that you bolted on some relationship mechanics to better flesh out your characters. I would love to see a video or a post that talks about what you added and why you felt it was a good addition to the game.

Robert Haynes

Modular synth chat in a Quinn’s Quest interview??!! You’re spoiling me.

There is so little challenge in ttrpg interviews. I love, love, love that that's in here. Sean's a smart guy and it made him think! And think in a constructive way: admitting they could do a better job of addressing tech and tonal variance. Also, fuckyeah ttrpgs are cool. I am very sad that I have fabulously creative, broadly open minded friends who just can't get past the D&D of it all. Here's hoping you can shake up the odd person like that. Looking forward to many more of these.

Just want to comment, as someone who works operating equipment for a 76 billion dollar company. Every day when I get to work, I go to a parking lot full of different equipments, and every single one EVERY SINGLE ONE of them has some issue, something broken, something doesn't work. Oh this one got AC... But it's slow. This one is fast! Doesn't have a horn. This one goes up fast, but goes down slow. This one goes slow both up and down, and on and on and on. They don't fucking care, so it makes perfect sense to me for spaceships owned by companies to have issues and safety hazards.

Wow what a great interview! How do you recognize a good Interview? When you drift of topic but still stay relevant to the listeners and generate a conversation rather than an interogation. And the best stuff came kind of after the interview πŸ˜… I am just guessing what was discussed and cut off (aprubtly) after the second 'goodbye' Quinns, keep making and improving those interviews! πŸ₯° P.s.: thats what I think is also a big part of the success of the osr, its the meta talk (as Sean mentioned as well)

Irgendwaslanges

Wow, I loved this! Super inspirational

Grant Brees

This interview is like the 10th thing to randomly name drop Gormenghast in the past few weeks. I tried to get into it , but I'm finding it pretty difficult. The prose requires 110% of my attention to follow.

Cave Darr

I love these interviews because they are reminders that people who make amazing ttrpgs are still people. There wasn't some IBM super computer creating the perfect game to maximize profits from us tabletop freaks, just people who wanted to make something cool.

birdmilk

What a great Interview guest! Looking forward so much to tomorrow as well!

I love Mothership so much. So far I've run one shots, but a longer campaign is definitely in the offing!

> "the campaign of it I'm playing has been some of the most fun I've ever had behind a GM screen" Well if that's not a ringing endorsement I dont know what is! My body is ready, can already tell this is going to be an epic review / interview. Can't wait!!!
