“Hold still.”

The doctor’s grip on Domi’s muzzle was surprisingly strong, and she thrust the swab into his nasal passage swiftly and precisely. On instinct, Domi tried to pull away, but the nurse that held him behind was also strong.

The doctor withdrew the swab, then ducked away swiftly before Domi sneezed on her. Less than a second later, she had already inserted the sample into the molecular point-of-care device.

Domi sniffed, another reflex. “Is this really necessary? It’s not like I’m going to…”

The doctor was struggling to push the device’s buttons with her thick fingers encased in latex. It was the nurse who hushed him, who replied, “Of course it’s necessary. We pride ourselves on the quality of the total experience.”

Domi wanted to nod, but he was too stiff, every sinew and muscle tense as steel. “I feel fine,” he said without confidence.

The nurse rubbed his shoulders, “And you are fine. Very fine, and very lucky to be here.” He could hear her soft giggle through the mask. “We’re all lucky.”

The nurse put her large hand over Domi’s scruff, and he could feel her body-heat even through the glove. Her grip squeezed, like a slow-closing vice. Beyond his control, Domi felt a chemical emotion spread over his body, from head to tail. A powerful release of powerlessness.

Again, he could hear the giggle through the nurse’s mask. “He has a nice coat,” she said. “I want to use the boysenberry shampoo on this one.”

The doctor hadn’t looked up from the point-of-care’s display. “No, this one is egg-whites and peanut oil. He’s got no allergies and we already have a table order.” Her machine sounded a beep, lit an LED in bright green. “Okay, he’s clean. Get ready.”

Domi was about to ask what he was supposed to do get ready, when the nurse pressed in close, one arm around his neck in a sleeper hold. A moment later, the doctor jabbed him directly in his neck’s cardioid. The next moment, a different wave spread over him, one that made him feel hovering slightly over his body. He tried to speak to the doctor, but his mouth wouldn’t open, his eyes wouldn’t focus.

And the doctor’s face was an unreadable mask, even behind her face shield. She put finger and thumb on his eyelids, nodded as she saw his pupil dilate. “Good. Give his bush a trim, but don’t shave; get him scrubbed and fluffed, they’ll be ready in fifteen.”

The nurse bounced, she could barely contain herself. “I’m so jealous. Don’t worry,” she reassured Domi she rubbed a frothy lather into his chest’s fur. “They might not look like they can take you, but the jaw — “ she squeezed Domi’s muzzle, and when she let go, his jaw hung slack, numb and drooling — “it will unhinge, just pop right out, and then it’s all smooth sailing.” She sighed, spun him around, gave his tail several rough strokes with an oiled brush.

The doctor dropped her gloves into the biohazard bin; the lid snapped shut with a loud bang of finality. “Next!”
