Pomo-industrial set design dominates over a predictable story of how the entertainment industry corrupts and destroys.
The three parallel stories of Johnny Virgil, who arrives in the city and quickly tops the charts, only to become a cynical burnout; Raymond Highsmith, who is already a cynical burnout; and Raustus Knight, the artful manager who manipulates, lies, cheats, steals, et cetera. Various characters appear to sing one signature numbe and then disappear. The story ends on an ambiguous note, implying that the city becomes so polluted as to be uninhabitable while the characters are too self-absorbed to notice or to care.
"Transverse City" debuted at the Yingwan Orpheum Theater. Despite attracting some big name cameos for opening night, the cast had many rotations, and attendance quickly dropped off as the reviews were in. Already in financial troubles, the production drained the remaining resources of the Orpheum, which closed its doors soon after.
