MangaGamer's yearly survey, Future Fragments finally releases, and which game mechanics should we see less of from developers. Which should we see more of?

call me a hipster if you want, but maybe it'd be a good thing if it stayed a niche category? not everything needs to have mainstream appeal.

Finished listening today and enjoyed the in-depth breakdown of a game I probably won't play. I'll raise this on the next show I'm on, but I'm curious what Annie and the fans would recommend to me as a few "must-plays" in adult gaming for me to have a stronger sense of what's out there. My general opinion is that adult games seem years behind mainstream games in storyline, character depth, strategy, etc., over the "porny" elements. Which I understand is what many people want, but as an industry, I think more integrative depth will be necessary for it to ever move past a niche category.

Regarding the most important qualities to attract players, I wonder if there's a significant difference between what entices people to give a game a chance vs. what keeps them interested long term. For me at least, story and characters are a huge factor in which games I keep playing past one or two sessions.

damn, i was looking forward to Future Fragments. i'll still probably check it out when it's on sale. i *loved* Flip Witch tho.

Flavor/renders sure, but after that the next thing that usually makes me alt+f4 is bad writing. You just can't escape it, and in VN it's a big part of the game. Even if the story is completely generic, you can make it decent with some non-horrible writing that I can decipher easily.
