I think it depends on the nature of the Patronage. Are you funding that specific game, or are you supporting the artist to explore more than that? I do think that the current system focuses on one game, which is why we see so much "milking".

I was a patron for Treasures of Nadia, Seeds of Chaos and Third Crisis, and I still love all of them, but once they released on Steam I bought that version as a kind of parting Thank You and moved my patronage to much smaller projects. Obviously Steam is no guarantee of success, but I feel like once a game gets onto the platform they move onto a new opportunity-curve, and I'd rather help more games reach that point than stick with old favourites. :)

My Steam video will talk more about the overall decline in the video game industry for 2022. The reality is that we were well on our way to a global video game crash in 2019, but Covid forcing us all to be isolated and inside "saved" the industry. However this did not remedy the situation, it only delayed it.

2022-12-13 13:40:19 +0000 UTCI've seen patreon numbers go up and down depending on development cycles and the economy. I had more when I was about ready to release a game. Right now I got half a new game to offer and support is lower. Luckily sales are doing OK. Patreon is also dependent on disposable income, and inflation this past year is draining that.
