20K and the future

Thanks to everyone for your support! When I first came up with the idea for the channel 2 years ago, I had no idea that this format would actually work. The almost universal positive response has been so amazing. You all are Awesome!

While I love being on YouTube, I do not love dealing with the unending sea of censorship, demonetization, and suppression that comes with my videos. There are so many topics that I want to talk about that YouTube just doesn't allow. YouTube does not make a distinction between "talking about a topic" and "advocating a topic."

So moving forward I am increasing the number of videos that I release on Patreon. The game reviews and lists will remain on YouTube as will most of the occasional "other" videos that I release. But the more sensitive topics and in depth flavor discussions will largely be on Patreon.

I mean the reality is that most of the videos we're talking about would never exist if I was only releasing on YouTube and hopefully I'll be able to make some kind of sanitized version or trailer for YouTube, but we'll just have to see on a case by case basis.

I'd love to hear what you think, so please let me know. I'm still learning as I continue on this journey with the rest of you all. The year end video lists start next week and will continue throughout December. Make sure to let me know what your favorite games of 2022 were and what you think should be Game of the Year. Thanks again for your support and I can't wait to share everything I have planned for 2023!

YouTube is vital to my growth, but they have made it clear that any discussion of sex and sexuality will be met with demonetization and suppression. That makes things much harder for me.

Annie

YouTube is how I discovered you.

Thanks! Private or public is fine either way.

As much as I dislike paywalls, if you think that's what you need to do to survive, do it. Besides you there's almost nobody sorting the good stuff from the shovelware, so I definitively want you to succeed. I'm not sure demonetization is a problem unique to Youtube, most advertisers just don't want to be associated with sex and pornography. Except for those already advertising such things of course - you might have some luck getting money from porn ads. Where do we let you know what we think should be GOTY? Do we send you a private message?

All of the Patreon videos to this point have used Vimeo. Which is hilarious, because Vimeo charges for video hosting. I'm hoping this new Patreon video hosting is reliable enough to be viable. I guess I'll find out in a few days when I upload the monthly Patron video.

Youtube's definitely a hostile environment for adult themes. Patreon seems okay, as long as you put adult stuff behind a paywall. I'm curious about the new Twitter video feature they're teasing; I'm using Vimeo atm, but it's... not a great platform. Anyway, keep copies of everything you do... the cost of uploading somewhere new is cheap compared to the cost of creating content, and you can always move if the place gets oppressive.

Thanks! I get YouTube wanting to be more "advertiser friendly," but it is really unfortunate how it impacts the channel.

Annie

I really appreciate your channel. As someone who only this year started playing adult content and visual novel games I was having a difficult time weeding out the good from the bad. Your channel has greatly help with that and your in-depth flavour focus vids have been informative and educational. Keep fighting the good fight on de-stigmatizing sexual content games. Such a shame sexual themes are seen as worse offenders then extreme violence.

I understand. It is sad that youtube is supressing your videos, because there is a need for someone to review NSFW games as well, and also the discussion about the topic is important to have. Anyway, I cheer for you!

I think any other platform is going to pose its own issues. I have enough trouble keeping up with YouTube, Twitter, and Patreon. Patreon has a new video format and has shown a willingness to tolerate discussion of sensitive topics as long as there isn't imagery associated with it. I'm going to try this format in the near term and see how it impacts the channel as a whole. There is also the revenue aspect to consider. More than 80% of my videos on YouTube are instantly demonetized and suppressed. Even if I had millions of views happening each month, at the current rate of demonetization I would still only earn a ten-thousandth of what a typical YouTube channel brings in per 1000 views. I don't accept sponsorships, keys, or private builds from developers, so my only real revenue stream is from Patreon. Given that reality, increasing the quality of content that I provide on this platform only makes sense. This is a tricky situation and like I said before: I'm still learning. I will closely monitor the overall response and if things are going poorly, I will definitely revisit this subject later on in 2023. I do appreciate the suggestion and Thank You!

Annie

Thanks!

Is Nebula a possibility? Then you can make short trailers on youtube, and end it with a referrance to Nebula for the full uncensored video?

Steamrollerman

Congratulations! It’s fun to watch someone with the passion and skill that you possess create your own unique content. I look forward to your future Patreon articles. I wish you all the luck!
