Are you wondering what a traditional Japanese bath is like? Well, I was too! On my first trip to Japan, I tried their traditional bathing style. And here's what I learned from observing locals firsthand.
1. Preparations
Typically, you'll need to prepare your own toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, and other essentials. Although, some hotels may provide these amenities.
2. Must be naked
Make sure you're completely naked! Don't wear anything, including underwear or shorts

3. Shower
Usually, every onsen is equipped with these four important items: a low stool, a basin, a shower faucet, and shampoo and soap. You bathe by sitting on the small stool
What a unique bathing experience! The small towel you bring or is provided is used as a sponge. Pour enough water into the basin, add the small towel, and then pour in some soap
You'll be surprised! The soap creates an abundance of rich lather, and the small towel can be used to scrub hard-to-reach areas of the body, such as your back
I've noticed that the Japanese people I've encountered here usually bathe only once daily, in the evening or at night, following their daily routines. As an Indonesian living in a tropical country, I'm used to bathing twice a day, once in the morning and again after finishing my daily activities, whether in the evening or at night
Make sure to bathe politely. Don't make a mess, and avoid splashing water everywhere to avoid disturbing others
4. Soaking in the water.
The temperature of the water is quite hot, around 40-42°C but it's still surprisingly comfortable!
I start by soaking my feet, then gradually submerge my entire body
You can soak as comfortably as you like. You can sit, squat, or even lie down. Soaking time varies depending on the temperature. If the water is warm, around 30-35°C, you can soak for 10-15 minutes
5. Rinse
Don't forget to rinse with just water after soaking to feel even cleaner

Once you've finished using the bathing facilities, please tidy up and put all the items back where they belong
6. Finished
Dry your body with a towel and get dressed immediately. You're all set!!

Note:
Tip: Don't forget to apply moisturizer right after onsen to prevent dry skin
