I did some soul searching and realized I reacted poorly to accepting that my memory is not what it was forty years ago. You are not to blame for my reaction to either post. Ah, I looked it up, I have the criterion collection edition (https://www.criterion.com/films/28948-pan-s-labyrinth), so there's a lovely interview of the director by a novelist about dark fairy tales and metaphors, and juxtapositions like when attractive people are villains, or someone falls in love with a monster. It's very interesting, and there's del Toro's audio commentary track too. Not part of the film, but extra content.

I've only watched this once before because i was an absolute mess after it. And I've ended up a complete mess the second time around too. I know it's technically a happy ending but it's still heart-breaking as well. It's just as stunning as i remember. And the pale man is just as creepy and the Captain is just as hateful. I can't deal with the gross stuff either - him bashing the guys face in, his mouth wound etc. Anyway, glad you enjoyed this amazing fairytale. I can't think of many films like it to be honest. It's so original and one of a kind.

Love the themes and nuances. The blue flower story ending on a shot of Captain Vidal, the way Ofelia (and others) display disobedience and how it ends up being crucial to the stories, the parallels between the magic and the real world... every time I watch it I see and feel something wonderful. If you can check out the special features, I recommend them, they're almost as wonderful as the feature film.

GdT is in a league of his own with his storytelling. even when i'm not particularly interested in the setting itself, the filmmaking and atmosphere just draws me in every time. can't wait to watch this with you! and yes, please watch The Shape of Water someday, it's incredible. ☺️

Pan's Labyrinth isn't a Spanish version of Labyrinth. It's a completely different original story. There are similarities in the themes of fantasy and a girl entering a magical world, but that's about it really.

This was so much better than the original English version that starred David Bowie. It was beautiful, heart set and more magnificently magical than the original. The original was good, very good, but this took it to a whole new level in its purity and artistry in the mystical characters 10 out of 10 thank you Franklin.
