On a scale of 1-10 - How HORROR is "The Haunting of Hill House"

PLEASE BE HONEST!!
Keep in mind I'm NOT a fan of horror at all! Also, keep in mind that ''the sixth sense'' was a bit scary for me! Before watching movies like ''Silence of the Lambs'' and ''A Quiet Place'', people told me those movies might be too scary for me. But I ended up loving the heck out of those movies, without actually being scared. Because there were more of psychological thrillers than horror horror.
I'm just giving out this info so you all can gauge my horror preference before voting. If you're going to comment try not to go into spoilers or some themes of the show. I still want to go in blind. Gracias 😊

I’m also not a fan of horror (with exceptions for beautifully made films like The Exorcist, which I still can’t watch alone.) But there’s a movie I think you’ll love: The Others, starring Nicole Kidman.

Susan B

gurlll Thank you. I know it is not just you lol I'm planning to give this show one episode (that's if I can even make it through)

Franklin

Well, I highly disagree with the results of this poll 😅. As someone who don't watch horror cause cannot deal with the aftermath (nightmares) I wouldn't recommend this show. For context: I have watched "The sixth sense" and "A quiet place" and I was fine with it, but just by watching the trailer of Mayfair Witches (the sister show of Interview with the Vampire) I knew it was a big NO for me. I could only watch half season of "The Haunting of Hill House" before I have to stop cause it was really messing with my sleep so badly. But, hey, maybe it's just me, and maybe if your problem with horror movies is not that they and gaves you nightmare, but only being scared WHILE watching then, give it a try, cause the story is really good.

Marie

Midnight Mass is 1000% better, and not what I would consider “horror”. I won’t say much more in case you want to watch it.

Christina H

Thank you!! I wasn’t sure it would be for him either.

Christina H

If The Sixth Sense was a bit too scary for you, this might be as well. To me, it was scarier.. plus it’s a series so it won’t end in hours. I didn’t have any problem with the “scary” (big jumps as the others say), but I’m not you. What frightened me more is the horror, spookiness, haunting, ghosts. And I’m not a huge fan of horror, living alone, so for a week or so after watching I didn’t like walking into a dark room. And I never wanted to watch it again, but that’s because horror is my least favorite genre. Well, after any and all Fast & Furious films. 😂 Maybe have your wife watch an episode and ask her opinion? She knows you best :) And sure, it does have a deep, heartfelt story .. but you asked us to gauge the horror level, not the story, so I gave it a 7. If you thought the TV show Evil might be too much, which is more satirical demon Catholic Church stuff, this will be very scary for you.

Christina H

it's not overloaded with cheap scares. the story and charachters definitly have piority in the series so the scares are mostly very plot & charachter driven. it depends on the charachter but taken the entire series as a whole i'd say a big scare per hour or so? (don't count the minutes bc it depends on charachter haha) . i think it's quite balanced, but when it comes it's done VERY WELL 😅

Kimia

I agree with the comments below, just wanted to add some detail. There is a little bit of gore, but less than The Sixth Sense. A few jump scares, maybe one per episode? The dread levels are high, lots of spooky sounds and worrying about what the camera is slowly panning towards. Also, in general, sad and stressful things are happening, and it feels like characters are in danger, including children.

I haven't looked at my messages yet. I will soon

Franklin

Oh wait, I just saw that you thought Sixth Sense was scary - yes, then you will find Haunting of Hill House extremely scary.

Three Dalmations

It's 6/10 on your scale, but simultaneously beautiful and intellectual. It's not the grim horror/gore for horror's sake that is typical of the genre. I'd say the show it's most similar to is Interview with the Vampire, in that it unfolds with unexpected meanings and complexity that isn't necessarily obvious in the first episode.

Three Dalmations

I would consider it a psychological horror. Flanagan is not a fan of cheap-ass jump scares but there are some (earned) jump scares throughout. It's a deep show though. Not just spooky for spooky's sake, if that makes sense. I don't scare super easily, and I joke that I may actually be dead inside because most things don't scare me or get me bawling outright. There's only been 3 shows in the last decade that have made me ugly cry, and those are: This Is Us, Interview With the Vampire, and Haunting of Hill House. That being said, while I prefer Hannibal to Haunting of Hill House, I adore them both, and I think you will too. <3

I would agree with some of the others & say it’s a 6. It’s not full of useless & cheap scares, but there are a few purposeful jump scares. It also deals with some creepy & serious content, so you may be sending up a prayer or 2. Most of the horror creeps in & builds up. I like the supernatural, so I would watch a lot more horror if I weren’t a scaredy cat lol. Mike Flanagan’s work is one of my exceptions. Flanagan horror is kind of romanticized in a way. Everything he makes is very intentional, with meaning, and beautiful. I can’t really express how big a fan I am of his.

Michelle Lugar

Absolutely agree. Both would be fabulous. Maybe it’s because Hill House generally receives more love that I try advocating for Midnight Mass 🥲🙏🏼

Nina Lenz

I always hope to see content creators watch both HH and MM as they're both incredible and my personal favs.

Jenny Jackson

Frank did you et my message?

Yvette

An allegory on family and grief. It is beautifully tragic with a couple of wild jump scares. Mike Flanagan is known for fantastic one take dialogue scenes that punctuate great writing.

Bethany that's me

I would be so very excited for you to watch either Hill House or Midnight Mass (my personal fav). I think it is difficult to talk about the horror aspects of the show without being spoiler-y. What I will say is that I love horror, and I found some of the earlier spooks genuinely scary, but I think the more story reveal there is, the sadder and more beautiful everything becomes. Definitely one that comes together as a whole and not just episode by episode. Judging from the empathetic human I have witnessed you to be, it might actually be more emotionally draining than scary overall, but I wouldn't want to assume. Much love!

Nina Lenz

I'd say it's the scariest of the all the Mike Flanagan shows but so, so beautiful. You will love it like A Quiet Place but it’s definitely creepy. Keep a cat or blanket close

Jessie

i watched it when it first came out so it’s been awhile, i also wasn’t a fan of horror back then so i may remember it to be more scary than it actually is 😭 i won’t lie, some of the “characters”/ghosts? are visually not nice to look at, like i will be trying to sleep in the dark and go wow what if they’re watching me right now 💀 but aside from that and the jumpscares which are just sudden more than actually scary (from memory), it’s fine and definitely worth watching. i’d probably say it’s about a 6/10 when it comes to horror from my standards anyway.

I think people saying it's not scary should definitely comment what they do or don't find scary for reference. For example my brother loves horror and loves being scared by things so of course he likes it. Whereas I want to avoid being scared and don't watch much horror

Kim D

It was pretty creepy for me the first time through but I was so invested in the story that I powered through and now I watch it regularly as my comfort show of sorts 🤣. I won't lie to you, there are some scenes that can be scary for people who aren't fans of horror. I'll just say that I think its totally worth it. There's a huge payoff! The scares aren't cheap, they're layered with meaning and metaphor. I recommend the show to everyone, even people who aren't fans of horror because its so much more than that. I really hope you decide to watch it, I honestly think you'd love it!

Jenny Jackson

The great thing about Mike's shows is that they're far more about the story than the horror, which makes them far superior to most scary media in my opinion.

Shane

It was relatively scary for me, at least in comparison to Mike Flanagan's other works. I've been watching horror since I was a baby because my mum loves 'em though, so I find it hard to judge for other people. Best I can say is I think it's not that scary for horror aficionado's, but for the average person who doesn't watch much horror or those who try to avoid it it's probably pretty damn scary. So I'm going with a 7.

Shane

It's more paranormal than horror, there are a few "scares" but it's more a metaphor for family drama and grief than "horror". I'm not 100% onboard with horror most of the time, but I love Flanagans work (the director).(Edit: Ack! Sorry if I spoiled anything...)

Jessi

Also I will added, from your comment your taste of horror, thriller is similar as mine, you will definitely love this one, can't wait to watch this with you again❤️🙂

Julita Piotrowska

I am the biggest scaredy cat ever, and I watched it and really loved it! There's a lot of allegory, symbolism, metaphor to sink your teeth into. It reminded me of that Tolstoy phrase: All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way...

Lola Lirola

This show made me cry more often than it made me jump, but your mileage may vary! (I voted 5)

Eric Lee

Such a good show! Not just next scary show but great, deep story behind it. Flanagan series are amazing, hug fan❤️🙂

Julita Piotrowska

I'm interested in the answer too as my brother keeps trying to get me to watch it but, much like you, I love things like A Quiet Place, vampire stuff and zombie stuff. But I hate creepy ghost stuff or creepy children/ haunted house stuff etc. I found The Sixth Sense scary too but I still really enjoyed it. And I seen one of the Paranormal Activity movies and it freaked me out big time!

Kim D

I’m a huge scaredy cat and I think it’s my favorite modern day “scary” show. To me, it has a spooky overtone and like a couple actual jumps. The writing is RICH in this series. (And my last name is Hill so I guess I have to be an expert on this. It’s not my house tho…extended family.)

Amanda Hill

it's more sad than scary imo they are still a few scares but they are here for a reason storywise it's never "cheap" scares
