I would say that one of the things I appreciate about the show the most is how, despite holding a mirror up to the pathologies of American society, it steadfastly refuses to villainize... anyone. It would be easy to take one side or the other of any given conflict it examines (ie, police vs. dealers in S1), but it doesn't do that. Instead, it demonstrates that the tendency of people in all walks of life is to follow the incentives set by our institutions and social structures, and how difficult it is to resist or changing those incentives. There are, I think, zero characters in the run of the show who you can't step into the shoes of and understand as a human if you are inclined to do so. That's incredible. This is a really important lesson that I wish everyone could learn. There are very few bad people, but a lot of bad incentives. And of course the level of authenticity is incredible, from every location to the casting of every extra. Every element of the production is skillful. All the pieces matter.

The real human connections and emotions that those characters carry and portray. The wire has that in spades
