They don't want other planets to have any sympathy for Ghorman, so they directed the narrative to focus on these kid soldiers to people will sound like assholes if they speak out.

Syril knew Cassian because on Ferris, Cassian snuck up behind him and held a blaster to his head. This is what created the vendetta for Syril. For Syril, Cassian is the face of the rebellion. He’s the rebel ghost he’s been chasing after, so they can get to Axis (Luthen). It was on sight for Syril. Such a tragic waste of life. He was DEDICATED, just playing for the wrong team. RIP Syril
