Some illegal stuff like using normal spells during opp turn exists and summoning face up defense but when they summon for example, it's legit. First Yugi summoned Alpha, then used brain control to take control of Arkana's monster on his next turn, then summoned Dark Magician. All legal. And in fact Brain Control was so busted it had to be Errata'd and had to be given a ton of restrictions to it. it became too powerful as time went on in the real TCG. But Yugi's plays were all legal.

Dark Magician IS decked out in Mardi Gras Purple and Green, with a Yellow magic circle behind him... He COULD be inspired by Medieval French magicians and gypsies, kinda like we saw in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, OR even more closely to the voodoo dude from New Orleans in Prince and the Frog.
