yes, all of this ! the details of the era they’ve lived in is completely flying over some of their heads. there weren’t many options back then, especially on such a small island. had ae-sun not had the choice of choosing gwan-sik’s love (a love in which she was very fortunate to have), she could’ve very well been in the same position. then, to go on and imply that the wife deserved (?) to be abused simply because ‘what else did she expect’ from an arranged marriage is absolutely insane and such an *awful* thing to say. okay, he waits up for his daughter to come in at night ? cool. he also hurts his wife emotionally, sometimes physically and punishes that same daughter by removing her bedroom door from its hinges & making her shave her head. let’s not get it twisted: there’s a reason none of the family members really like him. he did a couple of good things, that doesn’t make him a good man, father, or husband. it makes him a complicated / multifaceted one, on his way to possibly being better — but with, still, a widely negative lean. if we want to talk about “gold digging,” the marriage was mutually beneficial. he got a wife to take care of the children - like he wanted - while he provided a roof, food and cash. she took care of them so much so that one of the sons in a previous episode expressed how he was only still putting up with the father for his mother’s sake. the wife’s a bad person (bonus points: not a victim) because she didn’t love her abuser ? oh, please. 👋🏼 that part of this reaction was truly sickening.

For this woman, they could've gotten married because her family might've been in debt or for financial security. The man's a scumbag, we have them all around the area I grew up. They hit and abuse their spouse and they in their older years they try and do one good thing to redeem themselves when they notice their family might leave them. We saw in the earlier episode, she was already old and this scumbag picked up a broom to try and hit her but the son stopped it. Ae-sun was just outspoken because she was educated, but this woman was like a typical woman from that era, so it's unfair to call her a gold digger or what not when you can't even empathize with her situation.
