As for with Goku, I get Akira wanting to return him back to his more manga like roots and steer less from the ‘hero of earth’ portrayal he leaned closer to in the Z anime, I think it just comes down to preference. I just happened to like the Goku that was aware of the threats he unintentionally brought to earth and was serious (not to the extent of Vegeta ofc) yet smugly confident while dealing with them.

While we can agree to disagree on how we feel about which series holds up better, I do agree that I wish Vegeta played a more prominent role while not being under mind control and that him training as an equal along side Goku is definitely better then the way he got his ssj4 transformation.

Like, Vegeta is too big of a character to just be done dirty like that in GT and then by the end of it all the writers finally decide to make him have shine by giving him a new power up, from a machine instead of his traditional drive as a full-blooded saiyan to earn that form. I didn’t like that at all. And also, the way he was treated, being taken over and used by Baby, that pissed me off completely as a die hard Vegeta fan. So, say whatever negative thing about Daima and Super, but I love the way they handled Vegeta more in those than what GT did with his character.

And the thing with Vegeta, you know they have to find a ways to continue the old rivalry between him and Goku. That’s something that’s never gonna stop until they officially come to an end of DBZ in general. But at the end of GT, while I say it was a good ending on Goku passing the mantle to a new generation, I personally didn’t like the whole fusion situation against Omega Shenron. I didn’t like how it took a machine to make Vegeta into a Super Saiyan 4 and he didn’t train to earn that form, the writers basically slapped it on him like “well it’s the end of the series let’s go ahead and make him relevant by using a machine to grand him a new form and power without training purposes” and in a way the same could be said for Goku, except he didn’t need a machine. At least in Super, they received training from Whis and Beerus to learn how to better fight and control their abilities and newfound abilities. I enjoyed that more than anything in GT. But that’s just me.

Well when they made Super, Akira Toriyama wanted to go back to his roots in making Goku the same as he’s always been. Sure he’s mature and in most cases he’s a kid through and through. You gotta remember, Goku spent most of his childhood Allen after Grandpa Gohan died. He didn’t have anyone around to fully teach him how to progress as an adult, he had to learn some of that on his own while still maintaining his kid-like traits. That’s just what Akira wanting his character to be. Even in real life, there’s people who act goofy and silly that way even as adults. It’s one of the things that make Goku so likable and reliable.

I’m not sure if I agree with the characters. I’m not claiming either the story or development to be perfect (neither is Daima) but I liked how it felt like the end of Goku and Vegeta’s character arcs. Goku kept his ‘hillbilly yet serious when needed’ attitude that he had near the end of Z while fully growing in the role of mentor to Uub. Even as a child, he acted more mature than his adult self in Super. Vegeta is damn near a full fledged earthling and family man, focusing less on his “rivalry” with Goku and more on keeping the earth and his family safe. He even decides he WANTS to fuse with Goku to defeat Omega Shenron. Stuff like that stuck out to me even more as I got older.

The essence and atmosphere for GT was so pure and closely related to Toriyama original work that he constantly borrowed ideas from GT. Hell in a recent interview with toei it’s stated that they came up with the concept of daima BECAUSE of GT. The villains in GT are also written better. The humor was better in GT as well. GT only left a bad taste in ppls mouth because it tried being more closer to OG dragon ball when Z ended which had more of a serious tone that ppl were already used to. GT kept Z essence more than super and daima with the dialogue and character moments and build up.

For nostalgia, I get why people say it’s better than Daima. The theme song, the transformations especially Super Saiyan 4 and Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, they were great. But some of the story was unnecessary and felt weird. It was all over the place, even characters being nerfed like crazy for no reason. GT had its moments, but the stories and characters needed work. As a child, they were the best. But now as an adult, I see they had problems in different arcs and shit didn’t make sense. As someone who enjoys the lore and backstories of Dragonball and its characters to the fullest, I’d say Daima and Super are better with character development and story progression. Goku’s SSJ4 is cool, but I love the Daima version WAY better.
