The bread and lottery symbolize life’s essentials: bread as survival security (like food) and the lottery as financial security. : food is a human right, yet the man forces people to choose between them, even though he could easily provide both. This mirrors how governments, like in the U.S., could offer comprehensive welfare—food rights and income support—but instead, they make you feel like you have to choose between surviving and providing. In other countries with strong welfare systems, there’s government housing and support for low-income families, showing it’s possible to provide both. The problem is, systems like America’s make it seem like it’s your fault if you’re struggling after choosing one and neglecting the other. The man stomping on the bread represents how governments or elites waste the food on the wealthy—giving them billions in massive tax breaks and making them richer—which is money that could go into these things that people in need rely on. It’s a rigged game, and that’s the point.
