Obviously thats weird af, but a child back then wouldn’t assume something malicious. Most of them would just be curious as to why hes down there. And especially since kids typically love (or did back then) clowns, his guard was let down. You have to realize a lot has changed in the past 40 years, back then a lot of people never locked their doors. Back then, most people assumed everyone they met was a good person, like them, until proven otherwise. Nowadays its damn near the opposite
