Garp knows his position and the power he holds. He goes to save koby (from BB the one who captured ace in the first place) because koby is NOW the hero of the marines and isnt a pirate. Garp did all he could for ACE with the life HE Chose to live.

I’m just saying that, in my opinion, among all the anime characters, Garp had the best first showcase of power kind of moment. I liked Whitebeard's Marineford showcase of power, but that tsunami was stopped by Aokiji right after, causing no damage. Kaido destroyed the top of a mountain in his dragon form as his first showcase of power. Garp was destroying the whole island! Not to mention the best entrance in all of One Piece: that air punch he did to fly is CRAZY!!

Sengoku retired after marineford and recommended Aokiji to be next. but the five elders(or other higherups cant remember) recommended akainu. So they decided to duel to settle it. Akainu won and aokiji left. and its cool because its totally believable that aokiji hates akainu's Absolute justice so much that he wont serve him and its just as believable that him leaving the marines to join a yonko crew is almost exactly the description of SWORD that he gave to teach last episode and that their fight was to help sell it, he lost an arm and a leg which he uses his ice to replace. Theres evidence that both are true. we know that aokiji has seen first hand akainu's absolute justice at work specifically at OHARA during the buster call. aokiji hunted down and froze jaguar d saul and justified this operation to him saying ohara broke the rules at the same time the ship that was designated to evacuate non-archiologists, who were innocent, was destroyed by akainu claiming "if we are going to do this then we are full committing, if even one archiologist gets away then its all for nothing. this entire island must be purged". Saul then pushing aokiji if this was justice and was prob a big factor in him deciding to let robin live, to kind of cope. we also saw with koby and helmeppo that akainu killed 2 fellow marines at marineford who wanted to desert from the battlefield saying theres no reason to live if u dont live justly or something. aokiji probably didnt see this specific instant but may have heard about it from rumors or even just known akainu to not be opposed to friendly fire. On the flip side we saw aokiji save smoker on punk hazard from doflamingo. and almost hint to smoker that hes still himself. and last episode we see him almost trying to get koby off the hook by giving teach the lesson on SWORD. I think its also very important that aokiji is the one explaining it so he can control the narative on it to BB. which can be seen as him trying to bail koby out but also not give himself away. right now BB having two devil fruits both the strongest of their respective categories (paremicia and logia) that his mission is so important that even fighting garp to prove his loyalty is a sacrifice he needs to make (which is complete theory) garp also resigned after marineford and its possible that hes affiliated with sword and that his worst case scenario, in his mind, would be essentially exchanging himself for koby by throwing fight with aokiji which would save koby and get aokiji points with BB and we all know garp is an even bigger celebrity than koby for BB to use for his country. The theories are all over the place. Its pretty well written from the point that each theory is pretty possible. and this isnt even related to the strawhats and has just been developing since the end of marineford or even since ennies lobby/ohara on the side. pretty cool stuff.
