He's been researching the reason behind life and death alone for years. He created a revive system (Tower of Heaven) and a way to travel back in time (Eclipse Gate) which is kinda like dragon ball, it's not their timeline. But shows that infinite timelines like Ultear attacks are real. He also created the demons and if you look at the curses they have and what they embodied reflect his mindset (ways to die) throughout the years. Just to perfect END. All to lead to his death. But he has been wondering around the world observing humanity. Saw the rise and fall of many nations. To make his final decision which is why he wants the Fairy Heart, infinite energy (it never depletes and a perfect power source for what he has in his back pocket if Natsu can't kill him) He was born as a kind minded child who loved everything and to protect the things he loved he counterdicted the curse by switching his whole personality. Humans aren't meant to live for so long but also living alone and the sudden switch of who he was caused the Zeref of today. Zeref's curse overwhelmed Mavis' curse for reasons that will be explained later in the story. Sit tight and enjoy the story for what it is

I think hes mentioned that his idealogy is that if the world rejects him, he will reject the world. So He's just in his fuck it arc. I cant die, so im gonna fuck up the world and if it results in my death then thats just gravy cause fuck this bullshit world that cursed me.
