Suppressing your mana for life would never cross her mind cause that would be like if an insanely wealthy person just chose to live poor for the rest of their life. Overpowered anime villains usually lose on some dumbshit but Aura was actually being cautious with using soldiers to expend more of Frieren's mana despite her seemingly overwhelming mana advantage. The writing in this show is just too good.
